During operation, the system determines, by a management system which manages a plurality of printers, that a printer is unresponsive to messages sent to a first IP address associated with the printer. The system generates, based on a MAC address of the printer, a DHCP Lease Query in order to obtain a current IP address which corresponds to the MAC address. In response to sending the Lease Query to a DHCP server which manages IP addresses for the printer, the system receives the current IP address of the printer. The system sends, based on the current IP address, a second message to the printer to determine whether the printer is responsive.
