A test signal is emitted into a recording environment and acoustic parameters for the recording environment are calculated according to the test signal and a response to the test signal. An encoded signal including a recording of an audio event in the recording environment and the acoustic parameters is then transmitted to a listening site or affixed to a medium. At the listening site the acoustic parameters are extracted and the recording is enhanced or corrected according to the acoustic parameters. Acoustic parameters for the listening site may also be calculated and the recording may be further enhanced therewith.
