Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.

1

1. A method comprising: receiving a Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) message from an edge configuration device, wherein the LLDP message contains shortest path bridging (SPB) configuration information; and performing, using the SPB configuration information within the LLDP message received from the edge configuration device, an intermediate system-to-intermediate system (IS-IS) configuration in response to receiving the LLDP message.

2

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein an edge server device receives the LLDP message, arid wherein the edge server device performs the IS-IS configuration.

3

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein an edge server device receives the LLDP message, wherein the edge server device performs the IS-IS configuration, and wherein the edge configuration device and the edge server device are separate devices.

4

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the IS-IS configuration is enabled by the SPB configuration information provided by the edge configuration device.

5

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the performing the IS-IS configuration is initiated in response to receiving the LLDP message, the method further comprising: performing an SPB configuration in response to receiving the LLDP message.

6

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: performing an SPB configuration in response to receiving the LLDP message, wherein the performing the SPB configuration is enabled by the SPB configuration information provided by the edge configuration device.

7

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the performing the IS-IS configuration comprises initializing and maintaining adjacencies between neighboring edge server devices based on the SPB configuration information within the LLDP message received from the edge configuration device.

8

8. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer-readable medium including program instructions to be implemented by a device connected to a communication network, the program instructions for: receiving a Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) message from an edge configuration device, wherein the LLDP message contains shortest path bridging (SPB) configuration information; and performing, using the SPB configuration information within the LLDP message received from the edge configuration device, an intermediate system-to-intermediate system (IS-IS) configuration in response to receiving the LLDP message.

9

9. The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein an edge server device receives the LI,DP message, and wherein the edge server device performs the IS-IS configuration.

10

10. The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein an edge server device receives the LLDP message, wherein the edge server device performs the IS-IS configuration, and wherein the edge configuration device and the edge server device are separate devices.

11

11. The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the IS-IS configuration is enabled by the SPB configuration information provided by the edge configuration device.

12

12. The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the performing the IS-IS configuration is initiated in response to receiving the LLDP message, and wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium further includes program instructions for performing an SPB configuration in response to receiving the LLDP message.

13

13. The computer program product of claim 8 . wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium further includes program instructions for performing an SPB configuration in response to receiving the LLDP message, wherein the performing the SPB configuration is enabled by the SPB configuration information provided by the edge configuration device.

14

14. The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the performing the IS-IS configuration comprises initializing and maintaining adjacencies between neighboring edge server devices based on the SPB configuration information within the LLDP message received from the edge configuration device.

15

15. A device comprising: a memory; and at least one processor operative to access the memory and perform operations comprising: receiving a Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) message from an edge configuration device, wherein the LLDP message contains shortest path bridging (SPB) configuration information; and performing, using the SPB configuration information within the LLDP message received from the edge configuration device, an intermediate system-to-intermediate system (IS-IS) configuration in response to receiving the LLDP message.

16

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein an edge server device receives the LLDP message, and wherein the edge server device performs the IS-IS configuration.

17

17. The device of claim 15 , wherein an edge server device receives the LLDP message, wherein the edge server device performs the IS-IS configuration, and wherein the edge configuration device and the edge server device are separate devices.

18

18. The device of claim 15 , wherein the IS-IS configuration is enabled by the SPB configuration information provided by the edge configuration device.

19

19. The device of claim 15 , wherein the performing of the IS-IS configuration is initiated in response to receiving the LLDP message, and wherein the operations further comprising: performing an SPB configuration in response to receiving the LLDP message.

20

20. The device program product of claim 15 , wherein the performing the IS-IS configuration comprises initializing and maintaining adjacencies between neighboring edge server devices based on the SPB configuration information within the LLDP message received from the edge configuration device.
