Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.
1. A method, performed on a called party's mobile telephony device, of establishing a telephony link between a calling party and the called party's mobile telephony device, comprising: receiving, at the called party's mobile telephony device, a push notification from a push notification service, the push notification indicating that a request to setup an incoming telephone call to the called party's mobile telephony device has been received; activating a telephony software application that is resident on the called party's mobile device in response to receipt of the push notification; and sending a communication to a first server of an Internet protocol (IP) telephony system, wherein the communication is sent by the telephony software application in response to activation of the telephony software application, and wherein the communication causes the first server of the IP telephony system to send a reply message to the push notification service that requests the push notification service to inform the IP telephony system of the identity of the first server.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reply message sent to the push notification service causes the push notification service to inform the IP telephony system that the first server is in contact with the called party's mobile telephony device.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reply message causes the push notification service to send a SIP REDIRECT message to a second server of the IP telephony system that requested that the push notification service send the push notification to the called party's mobile telephony device.
4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the SIP REDIRECT message informs the second server of the IP telephony system that the second server can contact the first server of the IP telephony system to setup a telephone call with the called party's mobile telephony device.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein activating the telephony software application comprises informing the telephony software application that it is being activated because a party is attempting to setup an incoming telephone call to the called party's telephony device.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein activating the telephony software application comprises informing the telephony software application of the identity of the push notification service that sent the received push notification.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the received push notification includes information identifying a calling party that is attempting to setup an incoming telephone call to the called party's mobile telephony device, and wherein activating the telephony software application comprises providing the telephony software application with the information identifying the calling party.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the communication sent to the first server of the IP telephony system includes information identifying the push notification service that sent the received push notification message.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the communication sent to the first server of the IP telephony system comprises a SIP NOTIFY message that causes the first server to send the reply message to the push notification service.
10. A system, resident on a called party's mobile telephony device, for establishing a telephony link between a calling party and a called party's mobile telephony device, comprising: a telephony software application that is resident on the called party's mobile telephony device; means for receiving, at the called party's mobile telephony device, a push notification from a push notification service, the push notification indicating that a request to setup an incoming telephone call to the called party's mobile telephony device has been received; and means for activating the telephony software application in response to receipt of the push notification; wherein the telephony software application is configured to send a communication to a first server of an Internet protocol (IP) telephony system in response to being activated by the activating means, and wherein the communication causes the first server of the IP telephony system to send a reply message to the push notification service that requests the push notification service inform the IP telephony system of the identity of the first server.
11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the reply message sent to the push notification service causes the push notification service to inform the IP telephony system that the first server is in contact with the called party's mobile telephony device.
12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the reply message causes the push notification service to send a SIP REDIRECT message to a second server of the IP telephony system that requested that the push notification service send the push notification to the called party's mobile telephony device.
13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the SIP REDIRECT message informs the second server of the IP telephony system that the second server can contact the first server of the IP telephony system to setup a telephone call with the called party's mobile telephony device.
14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the means for activating the telephony software application informs the telephony software application that it is being activated because a party is attempting to setup an incoming telephone call to the called party's telephony device.
15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the means for activating the telephony software application informs the telephony software application of the identity of the push notification service that sent the received push notification.
16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the received push notification includes information identifying a calling party that is attempting to setup an incoming telephone call to the called party's mobile telephony device, and wherein the means for activating the telephony software application provides the telephony software application with the information identifying the calling party.
17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the communication sent from the telephony software application to the first server of the IP telephony system includes information identifying the push notification service that sent the received push notification message.
18. The system of claim 10 , wherein the communication sent from the telephony software application to the first server of the IP telephony system comprises a SIP NOTIFY message that causes the first server to send the reply message to the push notification service.
19. A non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon, which when executed by one or more processors of a called party's telephony device cause the called party's telephony device to perform a method comprising: receiving, at the called party's mobile telephony device, a push notification from a push notification service, the push notification indicating that a request to setup an incoming telephone call to the called party's mobile telephony device has been received; activating a telephony software application that is resident on the called party's mobile device in response to receipt of the push notification; and sending a communication to a first server of an Internet protocol (IP) telephony system, wherein the communication is sent by the telephony software application in response to activation of the telephony software application, and wherein the communication causes the first server of the IP telephony system to send a reply message to the push notification service that requests the push notification service to inform the IP telephony system of the identity of the first server.
20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the step of sending a communication to the first server of the IP telephony system comprises sending a SIP NOTIFY message that causes the first server to send the reply message to the push notification service.
