1

1. An optical transmitter, comprising: an encoder configured to encode input digital signals by one of a plurality of encoding methods and output encoded digital signals; a controller configured to identify an encoding method from among encoding methods depending on optical transmission attributes of the digital signals using an optical carrier wave; a mapper configured to map the encoded digital signals to modulation symbols and output mapped signals; and an optical modulator configured to modulate the optical carrier wave by using the mapped signals.

2

2. The optical transmitter according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of encoding methods differ from each other in their receiving sensitivities and code rates.

3

3. The optical transmitter according to claim 1 , wherein the encoder includes a local encoder that converts a number of bits into a different number of bits.

4

4. The optical transmitter according to claim 1 , wherein the optical carrier wave includes optical phases and polarization components used as the four-dimensional partitioning resulting from parity bits generation by the encoder.

5

5. The optical transmitter according to claim 1 , wherein the mapped signals are signals with at least one dimension of dimensions including optical phase, polarization, and wavelength of the optical carrier wave, and time.

6

6. The optical transmitter according to claim 5 , wherein the encoder performs encoding in such a way that an amplitude of an optical signal modulated by the optical modulator has a correlation between two types of polarization states of the optical carrier wave.

7

7. The optical transmitter according to claim 6 , wherein the mapper allocates a symbol to a signal point where the amplitude is maximized in at least one polarization state.

8

8. The optical transmitter according to claim 6 , wherein both polarization states exclude the mapped signals in which only symbol points with small amplitude are included.

9

9. The optical transmitter according to claim 1 , wherein the controller sets operation modes of the mapper and the optical modulator in addition to the encoder.

10

10. An optical communication system, comprising: the optical transmitter according to claim 1 ; and an optical receiver, wherein the optical receiver includes: a photoelectric conversion unit configured to receive and convert a modulated optical signal from the optical transmitter into an electrical signal and output a received signal, a demapping unit configured to demap the received signal and output a received bit signal, a decoder configured to receive input of the received bit signal and decode the received bit signal by using one of a plurality of decoding methods, and a decoding control unit configured to select a predetermined decoding method from among the plurality of decoding methods and cause the decoder to operate in accordance with the predetermined decoding method.

11

11. An optical transmitter, comprising: an encoder configured to encode input digital signals by one of a plurality of encoding methods and output the encoded digital signals; a controller configured to change an encoding method depending on optical transmission attributes of the digital signals using an optical carrier wave; a mapper configured to map the encoded digital signals to modulation symbols and output the mapped signals; and an optical modulator configured to modulate the optical carrier wave by using the mapped signals.

12

12. An optical communication method, comprising: encoding input digital signals by one of a plurality of encoding methods and outputting encoded digital signals; identifying an encoding method from among encoding methods depending on optical transmission attributes of the digital signals using an optical carrier wave; mapping the encoded digital signals to modulation symbols and outputting mapped signals; and modulating the optical carrier wave by using the mapped signals.

13

13. The optical communication method according to claim 12 , wherein the plurality of encoding methods differ from each other in their receiving sensitivities and code rates.

14

14. The optical communication method according to claim 12 , wherein the encoding includes converting a number of bits into a different number of bits.

15

15. The optical communication method according to claim 12 , wherein the optical carrier wave includes optical phases and polarization components used as the four-dimensional partitioning resulting from parity bits generation by the encoder.

16

16. The optical communication method according to claim 12 , wherein the mapped signals are signals with at least one dimension of dimensions including optical phase, polarization, and wavelength of the optical carrier wave, and time.

17

17. The optical communication method according to claim 16 , wherein the input digital signals are encoded in such a way that an amplitude of an optical signal modulated by the optical modulator has a correlation between two types of polarization states of the optical carrier wave.

18

18. The optical communication method according to claim 17 , wherein the mapping includes allocating a symbol to a signal point where the amplitude is maximized in at least one polarization state.

19

19. The optical transmitter according to claim 17 , wherein both polarization states exclude the mapped signals in which only symbol points with small amplitude are included.

20

20. The optical communication method according to claim 12 , further comprising setting operation modes of the mapping step and the modulating step.
