1. An apparatus comprising: one or more mobile devices communicatively coupled to the Internet via a WiFi network; one or more display dongles communicatively coupled to the Internet via the WiFi network, wherein the one or more display dongles are communicatively coupled to the one or more mobile devices via the WiFi network; one or more servers communicatively coupled separately to the one or more mobile devices and the one or more display dongles via a combination of the Internet and the WiFi network; and one or more display devices independent of the one or more mobile devices communicatively coupled to the one or more display dongles via an electronic coupling, wherein a mobile device of the one or more mobile devices is programmed to receive code transmitted from a server of the one or more servers, the code enabling the mobile device to control a display dongle of the one or more display dongles, the server configured to initialize the display dongle to receive streaming video data from the server, and wherein the mobile device is configured to request streaming of the streaming video data from the server to the display dongle, and wherein the display dongle is configured to receive the streaming video data and is configured to transmit the streaming video data to a display device of the one or more display devices via the electronic coupling, and wherein the mobile device is configured to initiate transmission of the streaming video data from the server to the display device via the display dongle, and wherein the mobile device is configured to control transmission of the streaming video data including at least starting, stopping and pausing display of the streaming video data to the display device.

2

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the display device is a television.

3

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the electronic coupling between the display dongle and the display device for streaming video data is via an HDMI connection.

4

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the display dongle is configured to include at least one instantiation of a host application.

5

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of display dongles connected to the WiFi network, wherein the mobile device is configured to select the display dongle from among the plurality of display dongles to initiate transmission of the stream of video data to the display dongle.

6

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the display dongles communicate using any of TCP, UDP, or HTTP.

7

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the code transmitted from the server enabling the one or more mobile devices to control the one or more display dongles is one or more IP addresses of the one or more display dongles on the WiFi network.

8

8. A method comprising: requesting, by one or more mobile devices, transmission of code to the one or more mobile devices communicatively coupled to the Internet from one or more remote servers for controlling transmission of streaming video data to one or more display dongles; requesting, by the one or more mobile devices, initialization at least in part with said code of the one or more display dongles communicatively coupled to the Internet via a WiFi network for receipt of the streaming video data from the one or more remote servers, wherein the one or more display dongles are communicatively coupled to the one or more mobile devices via the WiFi network, wherein the one or more remote servers are communicatively coupled separately to the one or more mobile devices and the one or more display dongles via a combination of the Internet and the WiFi network; requesting, by the one or more mobile devices, the streaming video data from one or more of a plurality of sources from the one or more remote servers to be received by the one or more display dongles, wherein a display device is communicatively coupled to the one or more display dongles via an electronic coupling; controlling, by the one or more mobile devices, transmission of the streaming video data with the one or more mobile devices, including at least starting, stopping, and pausing display of the streaming video data on the display device.

9

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the display device is a television.

10

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the electronic coupling is via an HDMI connection.

11

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the one or more display dongles are each configured with at least one instantiation of a host application.

12

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the one or more display dongles are also configured to receive a stream of audio data or video game data from a remote server.

13

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising querying, by the one or more display dongles, the one or more remote servers, to determine a list of one or more applications that can be instantiated on the one or more display dongles.

14

14. The method of claim 8 , further comprising selecting a dongle from a plurality of display dongles including the one or more display dongles and connected to the WiFi network.

15

15. A method comprising: providing one or more display dongles configured to receive streaming video data from one or more remote servers and display the streaming video data on a display device via an electronic coupling; at the request of one or more mobile devices, installing, on the one or more display dongles, first code configured to initialize the one or more display dongles to receive the streaming video data; and at the request of the one or more mobile devices, installing, on the one or more display dongles, second code configured to allow the one or more mobile devices to request the streaming video data from a plurality of sources from the one or more remote servers to be sent to the one or more display dongles; wherein the second code is further configured to enable a user of the one or more mobile devices to control at least initiation, ending and pausing of output of the streaming video data on the display device via the one or more display dongles.

16

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the display device is a television and wherein the electronic coupling is via an HDMI connection.

17

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the one or more display dongles are configured with at least one instantiation of a host application.

18

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the one or more display dongles are also configured to receive a stream of audio data or video game data from the one or more remote servers.

19

19. The method of claim 17 , further comprising querying, by the one or more display dongles, the one or more remote servers, to determine a list of one or more applications that can be instantiated on the one or more display dongles.

20

20. The method of claim 15 , further comprising sending third code to the one or more display dongles allowing a user to select the one or more display dongles from a plurality of display dongles connected to a same WiFi network, wherein the one or more mobile devices are configured to initiate streaming of the streaming video data to the one or more display dongles.
