1. In a digital medium environment for digital image synchronization and storage, a method implemented by an external synchronization system, the method comprising: receiving, by the external synchronization system, a communication from a computing device, the communication including: a compressed portion of a plurality of portions of a composite representation of a local instance of a digital image file that has been altered at the computing device and not including at least one other portion of the plurality of portions of the composite representation of the local instance of the digital image file that is not altered at the computing device; and an indicator of the compressed portion; locating, by the external synchronization system responsive to the receiving, a portion of a composite representation of a remotely stored instance of the digital image file maintained by the external synchronization system, the locating based on the indicator; synchronizing, by the external synchronization system responsive to the locating, the portion of the composite representation of the remotely stored instance with the compressed portion received as part of the communication; and storing, by the computing device responsive to the synchronizing, the synchronized portion as part of the composite representation of the remotely stored instance.

2

2. The method as described in claim 1 , wherein the indicator is generated responsive to an edit that alters the local instance of the digital image file.

3

3. The method as described in claim 1 , wherein the communication is received via a network.

4

4. The method as described in claim 1 , wherein the synchronizing does not include the at least one other portion of the composite representation of the remotely stored instance that is not altered.

5

5. The method as described in claim 1 , wherein the indicator is generated responsive to a change made to the digital image file as stored in non-persistent storage at the computing device.

6

6. The method as described in claim 5 , wherein the indicator is also configured to synchronize the local instance of the digital image file maintained at the computing device in persistent storage.

7

7. The method as described in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of portions corresponds to a layer, a channel, or a tile of a digital image of the digital image file.

8

8. The method as described in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of portions of the composite representation of the local instance are separately compressed.

9

9. The method as described in claim 1 , wherein the communication is received responsive to an input to initiate storing of the local instance of the digital image file at the computing device.

10

10. In a digital medium environment for digital image synchronization and storage, an external synchronization system comprising: a processing system; and a computer-readable storage media having: a remotely-stored instance of a composite representation of a digital image file; and instructions stored thereon that, responsive to execution by the processing system, causes the processing system to perform operations including: receiving a communication from a computing device, the communication including an indicator and a compressed portion of a plurality of portions of a composite representation of a local instance of the digital image file that has been altered at the computing device; locating a portion of the composite representation of the remotely stored instance of the digital image file maintained at the computer-readable storage media, the locating based on the indicator; synchronizing the portion of the composite representation of the remotely stored instance with the compressed portion received as part of the communication, the synchronizing does not include at least one other portion of the composite representation of the remotely stored instance that is not altered; and storing the synchronized portion as part of the composite representation of the remotely stored instance in the computer-readable storage media.

11

11. The external synchronization system as described in claim 10 , wherein the indicator is generated responsive to an edit that alters the local instance of the digital image file.

12

12. The external synchronization system as described in claim 10 , wherein the communication does not include the at least one other portion of the plurality of portions of the composite representation of the local instance of the digital image file that is not altered at the computing device.

13

13. The external synchronization system as described in claim 10 , wherein the communication is received via a network.

14

14. The external synchronization system as described in claim 10 , wherein the indicator is generated responsive to a change made to the digital image file as stored in non-persistent storage at the computing device.

15

15. The external synchronization system as described in claim 14 , wherein the indicator is also configured to synchronize the local instance of the digital image file maintained at the computing device in persistent storage.

16

16. The external synchronization system as described in claim 10 , wherein the plurality of portions corresponds to a layer, a channel, or a tile of a digital image of the digital image file.

17

17. The external synchronization system as described in claim 10 , wherein the plurality of portions of the composite representation of the local instance are separately compressed.

18

18. The external synchronization system as described in claim 10 , wherein the communication is received responsive to an input to initiate storing of the local instance of the digital image file at the computing device.

19

19. In a digital medium environment for digital image synchronization and storage, a method implemented by a computing device, the method comprising: altering, by the computing device, a local instance of a digital image file by an image editing application; storing, by the computing device, the altered local instance as a composite digital image file having a plurality of components; identifying, by the computing device, a component of the plurality of components that is altered based on an indication received from the image editing application; and forming a communication as including the indication and the identified component and not including at least one other component of the plurality of components that is not altered, the communication configured to cause synchronization with a remotely stored instance of the digital image file.

20

20. The method as described in claim 19 , wherein the forming is performed responsive to an input to initiate storing of the local instance of the digital image file at the computing device.
