1. A method, performed by a notification service implemented with machine-readable instructions executed by one or more computer processors, for managing action items derived from messages, the method comprising: monitoring messages posted to multiple sources of text-based communications to identify action items and their intended recipients based on the monitored messages; storing, for each of the action items, an instance of a universal actionable notification data structure specifying a source of the action item, one or more intended recipients of the action item, a notification text, and response options associated with the action item; and for a specific user: identifying and aggregating action items intended for the specific user across multiple sources from which the action items originate, and aggregating and sending notification messages generated from the instances of the universal actionable notification data structures stored for the identified action items from across multiple sources to a central notification inbox accessible by the specific user; receiving a user response to the notification message for at least one of the identified action items, the user response specifying one of the response options; and generating a response message based on the received user response and posting the response message to the source from which the respective action item originated, wherein the source is identified in the instance of the universal actionable notification data structure associated with the action item.

2

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the messages comprise unstructured text messages with embedded action items.

3

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the messages comprise structured actionable notifications generated by software tools.

4

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the multiple sources from which the action items originate include multiple message channels within a software-implemented communication and collaboration platform.

5

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the message channels are associated with different respective groups of users and contain messages exchanged between users within the respective group.

6

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the action items comprise multiple types of action items, and wherein a number and types of response options in each actionable notification data structure depend on the respective type of action item.

7

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the types of action items comprise at least two of task assignments, event reminders, invitations, appointment confirmation requests, scheduling requests, and polls.

8

8. The method of claim 1, wherein all actionable notification data structures include the same number and types of generic response options.

9

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the actionable notification data structure further specifies one or more automated actions to be taken upon receipt of a user response.

10

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the actionable notification data structure further specifies, separately for each of the response options, an associated automated action to be taken upon selection of that response option.

11

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising, for each of the action items, automatically determining the response options and populating the universal actionable notification data structure based in part on the response options to generate the instance of the universal actionable notification data structure for the action item.

12

12. A computer system for managing action items derived from messages, the system comprising: one more computer processors; and one or more machine-readable media storing instructions which, when executed by the one or more computer processors, cause the one or more computer processors to perform operations comprising: monitoring messages posted to multiple sources of text-based communications to identify action items and their intended recipients based on the monitored messages; storing, for each of the action items, an instance of a universal actionable notification data structure specifying a source of the action item, one or more intended recipients of the action item, a notification text, and response options associated with the action item; and for a specific user: identifying and aggregating action items intended for the specific user across multiple sources from which the action items originate, and aggregating and sending notification messages generated from the instances of the universal actionable notification data structures stored for the identified action items from across multiple sources to a central notification inbox accessible by the specific user; receiving a user response to the notification message for at least one of the identified action items, the user response specifying one of the response options; and generating a response message based on the received user response and posting the response message to the source from which the respective action item originated, wherein the source is identified in the instance of the universal actionable notification data structure associated with the action item.

13

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the messages comprise unstructured text messages with embedded action items.

14

14. The system of claim 12, wherein the messages comprise structured actionable notifications generated by software tools.

15

15. The system of claim 12, wherein the multiple sources from which the action items originate include multiple message channels within a software-implemented communication and collaboration platform, the message channels being associated with different respective groups of users and contain messages exchanged between users within the respective group.

16

16. The system of claim 12, wherein the action items comprise multiple types of action items, and wherein a number and types of response options in each actionable notification data structure depend on the respective type of action item.

17

17. The system of claim 12, wherein the actionable notification data structure further specifies one or more automated actions to be taken upon receipt of a user response.

18

18. The system of claim 12, wherein the actionable notification data structure further specifies, separately for each of the response options, an associated automated action to be taken upon selection of that response option.

19

19. The system of claim 12, the operations further comprising, for each of the action items, automatically determining the response options and populating the universal actionable notification data structure based in part on the response options to generate the instance of the universal actionable notification data structure for the action item.

20

20. A machine-readable medium storing instructions implementing a notification service for managing action items derived from messages, the instructions, when executed by one or more computer processors, cause the one or more computer processors to perform operations comprising: monitoring messages posted to multiple sources of text-based communications to identify action items and their intended recipients based on the monitored messages; storing, for each of the action items, an instance of a universal actionable notification data structure specifying a source of the action item, one or more intended recipients of the action item, a notification text, and response options associated with the action item; and for a specific user: identifying and aggregating action items intended for the specific user across multiple sources from which the action items originate, and aggregating and sending notification messages generated from the instances of the universal actionable notification data structures stored for the identified action items from across multiple sources to a central notification inbox accessible by the specific user; receiving a user response to the notification message for at least one of the identified action items, the user response specifying one of the response options; and generating a response message based on the received user response and posting the response message to the source from which the respective action item originated, wherein the source is identified in the instance of the universal actionable notification data structure associated with the action item.
