Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.
1. A method of resolving trouble in a connection having a plurality of components with a plurality of characteristics, the method comprising: selecting at least one characteristic from said plurality of characteristics common to the plurality of components as a basis for predicting and diagnosing trouble, said plurality of characteristics including component age, component type, component length, component size, and component gauge; providing a first value for the selected characteristic common to the plurality of components; based on a performance history of the connection, providing a second value representing one of prior trouble or no prior trouble with the connection; determining a probability of trouble in the connection at a given time as a function of the first value and the second value; and, based on the probability of trouble, performing at least one of: repairing at least one component in the connection, and replacing at least one component in the connection.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining includes: expressing the second value as a function of the first value and a third value; and, approximating the third value to permit the function of the first value and the third value to approach the second value, wherein the third value represents the probability of trouble in the connection at a given time.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the connection comprises a telephone connection.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one component comprises a cable segment.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein a characteristic of a component comprises at least one of cable age, cable type, cable length, cable size, and cable gauge.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining comprises performing a regression calculation.
7. A computer program product, disposed on a computer readable medium, for resolving trouble in a connection having a plurality of components with a plurality of characteristics, the computer program product comprising instructions for causing a processor to: use at least one characteristic from said plurality of characteristics common to the plurality of components as a basis for predicting and diagnosing trouble, said plurality of characteristics including component age, component type, component length, component size, and component gauge; provide a first value for the used characteristic common to the plurality of components; receive a second value representing one of prior trouble or no prior trouble with the connection, the second value based on a performance history of the connection; determine a probability of trouble in the connection at a given time as a function of the first value and the second value; and, based on the probability of trouble, perform at least one of: identify at least one component in the connection for repair, and identify at least one component in the connection for replacement.
8. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the instructions for causing the processor to determine include instructions for causing the processor to: express the second value as a function of the first value and a third value; and, approximate the third value to permit the function of the first value and the third value to approach the second value, wherein the third value represents the probability of trouble in the connection at a given time.
9. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the connection comprises a telephone connection.
10. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein at least one component comprises a cable segment.
11. The computer program product of claim 10 , wherein a characteristic of a component comprises at least one of cable age, cable type, cable length, cable size, and cable gauge.
12. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the instructions for causing the processor to determine comprise instructions for causing the processor to perform a regression calculation.
