Volume Migration

1. A computerized method comprising: identifying a first volume, said first volume comprising a set of one or more first volume extents; said first volume extents occupying at least one disk; adding the at least one disks occupied by the first volume to a platter list; performing a set of recursive tasks on each disk added to the platter list, said set of tasks comprising: identifying a second volume comprising a set of one or more second volume extents; said second volume extents occupying the disk and at least one other disk, adding all the other disks occupied by the second volume to the platter list, exiting the set of recursive tasks when all the other disks occupied by the second volume are added to the platter list, and exporting the volumes contained on the disks listed in the platter list.

2. The computerized method of claim 1 , wherein exporting the volumes comprises removing the disks on the platter list from a source diskpack and adding the disks on the platter list to a receiving diskpack.

3. The computerized method of claim 1 , wherein exporting the volumes comprises copying the volumes to an archive media.

4. The computerized method of claim 1 , wherein the volumes contain data comprising a file system.

5. The computerized method of claim 1 , wherein the volumes contain data comprising a database.

6. A computerized system comprising: a computer comprising a processor, a memory, and a computer-readable medium operatively coupled together; an operating environment executing in the processor from the computer-readable medium; a logical volume manager operative to control the configuration of at least one disk of a disk storage system, said disk having volumes, said volumes having extents; and an export component running under the control of the operating system, said export component operative to communicate with the logical volume manager through an Application Program Interface (API), wherein the export component creates a platter list identifying at least one disk having a first identified volume and disks containing at least one friendly volume that has extents residing on the at least one disk containing the first identified volume, and wherein the export component cause the logical volume manager to disassociate the at least one disk from the source diskpack and associate the at least one disk with the receiving diskpack.

7. The computerized system of claim 6 , wherein the receiving diskpack is an archive media.

8. The computerized system of claim 6 , wherein the receiving diskpack is operatively coupled to a data mining system.

9. A computerized method for exporting transitively related volumes in a system having multiple storage disks, each volume residing on one or the more multiple storage disks, comprising: (a) identifying a volume for exportation; (b) adding each disk resided on by the identified volume to a platter list; (c) determining whether the disks in the platter list include previously unidentified volumes; (d) if the disks in the platter list include previously unidentified volumes, identifying the previously unidentified volumes, adding all disks resided on by the previously unidentified volumes to the platter list, and repeating steps (c) and (d); (e) if the disks in the platter list do not include previously unidentified volumes, compacting all identified volumes; and (f) exporting all identified volumes.

10. The computerized method of claim 9 , wherein exporting the volumes comprises removing the disks on the platter list from a source diskpack and adding the disks on the platter list to a receiving diskpack.

11. The computerized method of claim 9 , wherein exporting the volumes comprises copying the volumes to an archive media.

12. The computerized method of claim 9 , wherein determining whether the disks in the platter list include previously unidentified volumes comprises determining whether extents belonging to volumes not previously identified occupy the disks in the platter list.

13. The computerized method of claim 9 , wherein the volumes contain data comprising a file system.

14. The computerized method of claim 9 , wherein the volumes contain data comprising a database.
