Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.
1. A method for controlling use of media content comprising: adding a random noise signal to perceptible portions of the media content to control or limit use of the media content, the random noise signal being distributed across locations within the media content; and in response to receiving authorization, removing the noise signal from the perceptible portions of the media content to provide a higher quality, usable version of the media content.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein authorization comprises payment.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein the removing of the noise signal is performed by hardware or software activated by the authorization.
4. The method of claim 3 wherein the authorization comprises payment.
5. The method of claim 1 wherein the noise signal conveys plural auxiliary data.
6. The method of claim 5 wherein the noise signal conveys a control data for controlling use of the media content.
7. A computer readable medium upon which is stored instructions for processing media content, the instructions performing a method of: recognizing a random noise signal that has been added to perceptible portions of the media content to control or limit use of the media content, the random noise signal being distributed across locations within the media content; and in response to receiving authorization, removing the noise signal from the perceptible portions of the media content to provide a higher quality, usable version of the media content.
8. A device for processing media content comprising: memory for storing the media content; and a signature recognizer for recognizing an embedded random noise signature embedded in perceptible portions of the media content and distributed across locations in the media content, and the signature recognizer for removing the embedded noise signature from the perceptible portions of the media content to produce a higher quality version of the media content in response to receiving authorization.
9. A device for processing media content comprising: memory for storing the media content; a signature recognizer for recognizing an embedded random noise signature distributed across locations in the media content and for removing the embedded noise signature to produce a higher quality version of the media content in response to receiving authorization; and a signature embedding for embedding an imperceptible signature in the higher quality version of the media content.
10. The device of claim 9 wherein the imperceptible signature comprises a tracking code.
11. A method of processing media content, the method comprising: recognizing a noise signal that has been added to the media content to control or limit use of the media content; in response to receiving authorization, providing a higher quality, usable version of the media content; and embedding an imperceptible signature in the higher quality version of the media content.
12. The device of claim 11 wherein the imperceptible signature comprises a tracking code.
13. A computer readable medium on which is stored instructions for performing the method of claim 11 .
