Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.
1. An iris color correction apparatus comprising: a skin color identification means which identifies the skin color of a photographed person in an inputted image; a skin correction color calculation means which obtains a skin correction color that is an iris color of said person that should be shown in said image based on the skin color identified by said skin color identification means; an original iris color calculation means which obtains an original iris color that is a representative color of a peripheral region of the iris of said photographed person from the color of pixels included in the peripheral region; a correction reference color setting means which acquires said obtained skin correction color and original iris color, and sets one of the skin correction color and the original iris color to be a correction reference color when correction is carried out; and a correction means which corrects the iris color of said photographed person based on said correction reference color; wherein said correction reference color setting means compares the obtained said original iris color and the iris color obtained by correcting the peripheral region of said iris based on the obtained said skin correction color, and sets said original iris color as said correction reference color in the case where said corrected iris color has more redness than said original iris color, and sets said skin correction color as said correction reference color in the case where said corrected iris color has less redness than said original iris color.
2. The iris color correction apparatus described in claim 1 , further comprising: a face detection means which detects a face region that includes an entire face or a portion thereof of the photographed person in the inputted image, and an iris detection means which detects an iris region that includes the entire iris or a portion thereof of said person detected by said face detection means, wherein said skin color identification means identifies a skin color based on color of pixels included in the face region detected by said face detection means, and said original iris color calculation means obtains an original iris color based on the color of pixels included in the peripheral region of the iris detected by said iris detection means.
3. The iris color correction apparatus described in claim 2 , further comprising: a judgment means which judges whether an abnormality occurs in the iris color of said person in said image by comparing the correction reference color set by said correction reference color setting means and the color identified from the iris region detected by said iris detection means, wherein said correction means carries out a correction process in the case where an abnormality is judged by the judgment means.
4. The iris color correction apparatus described in claim 3 , wherein said judgment means judges whether an iris portion of said person in said image forms red-eye by comparing the redness in the correction reference color set by said correction reference color setting means and the redness in the color identified from the iris region detected by said iris detection means.
5. The iris color correction apparatus described in claim 2 , wherein said correction means carries out correction on the pixels of the iris region detected by said iris detection means while maintaining the brightness of said pixels.
6. A computer readable medium storing a program comprising functionality for causing a computer to perform: identifying the skin color of a photographed person in an inputted image; obtaining a skin correction color that is an iris color of said person that should be shown in said image based on the identified skin color; obtaining an original iris color that is a representative color of a peripheral region of the iris of said photographed person from the color of pixels included in the peripheral region; acquiring said obtained skin correction color and original iris color, and setting either color to be a correction reference color when correction is carried out; comparing the obtained said original iris color and the iris color obtained by correcting the peripheral region of said iris based on the obtained said skin color, and sets said original iris color as said correction reference color at the time correction is carried out in the case where said corrected iris color has more redness that said original iris color, and sets said skin correction color as said correction reference color in the case where said corrected it is color has less redness than said original iris color; and correcting the iris color of said photographed person based on said correction reference color.
7. The iris color correction apparatus described in claim 3 , wherein said correction means carries out correction on the pixels of the iris region detected by said iris detection means while maintaining the brightness of said pixels.
8. The iris color correction apparatus described in claim 4 , wherein said correction means carries out correction on the pixels of the iris region detected by said iris detection means while maintaining the brightness of said pixels.
