Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.
1. A system for providing a streaming service in a wireless packet network comprising: a wireless router having an antenna and configured to: achieve a predetermined error rate for transmission of data packets by adapting a modulation and coding level, the adaptation of the modulation and coding level based at least on a relationship between the error rate and a signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, wherein the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio is determined at least by a signal path gain, a maximum transmission power level, and a predicted interference power level; and adjust a transmission power based at least on the adapted modulation and the coding level to a level which provides desirable performance, wherein the antenna is configured to transmit the packets of data in accordance with said modulation and said coding level and with said transmission power, and wherein the wireless router is configured to adjust the transmission power level based on a value of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio multiplied by a value of the predicted interference power level divided by a value of the signal path gain.
2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the router includes a Generalized Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Support Node.
3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless router further includes a filter configured to predict the interference power level.
4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the filter includes a Kalman-filter.
5. The system of claim 1 wherein the streaming service comprises a music delivery service.
6. The system of claim 1 wherein said predetermined error rate comprises a non-zero error rate.
7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless router is further configured to apply error-concealment techniques to the data packets at a receiving end.
8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless router is further configured to adapt the modulation and coding level at periodic intervals.
9. The system of claim 1 wherein the wireless router is further configured to adjust the transmission power at periodic intervals.
10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless router is configured to determine the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio by multiplying a value of the maximum transmission power level by a value of the signal path gain and dividing by a value of the predicted interference power level.
11. A system for providing a streaming service in a wireless packet network comprising: a means for adapting a modulation and coding level based at least on a relationship between the error rate and a signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, a means for determining the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio based at least on a signal path gain, a maximum transmission power level, and a predicted interference power level; a means for adjusting transmission power based at least on the adapted modulation and the coding level to a level which provides desirable performance, a means for transmitting the packets of data in accordance with the modulation and the coding level and with the transmission power, wherein the means for adapting a modulation and coding level achieves a predetermined error rate for transmission of data packets, and wherein the means for adjusting the transmission power adjusts the transmission power level based on a value of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio multiplied by a value of the predicted interference power level divided by a value of the signal path gain.
12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the system includes a Generalized Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Support Node.
13. The system of claim 11 , further comprising a means for predicting the interference power level.
14. The system of claim 11 wherein the streaming service comprises a music delivery service.
15. The system of claim 11 , wherein said predetermined error rate comprises a non-zero error rate.
16. The system of claim 11 , further comprising a means for applying error-concealment techniques to the data packets at a receiving end.
17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the means for adapting the modulation and coding level adapts the modulation and coding level at periodic intervals.
18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the means for adjusting the transmission power adjusts the transmission power at periodic intervals.
19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the means for determining the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio determines the signal-to-interference-to-noise ratio by multiplying a value of the maximum transmission power level by a value of the signal path gain and dividing by a value of the predicted interference power level.
