A display system comprising: a light source; a color wheel; an optical section arranged to receive light from the light source and direct the light toward the color wheel; and a spatial light modulator arranged to receive the light from the color wheel and to direct image data toward a display, wherein the image data comprises an array of pixels arranged in rows and columns and wherein the array of pixels comprises pixels of at least three colors that are to be displayed simultaneously, wherein the image data comprises a plurality of bit slices, each of the plurality of bit slices having a variable position and a variable curvature within the array of pixels, each of the plurality of bit slices having a constant bit-weight for all positions.
2. The system of claim 1 wherein the array of pixels comprises curved color bands.
3. A display system comprising: a light source; a color wheel; an optical section arranged to receive light from the light source and direct the light toward the color wheel; and a spatial light modulator arranged to receive the light from the color wheel and to direct image data toward a display, wherein the image data comprises an array of pixels arranged in rows and columns and wherein the array of pixels comprises pixels of at least three colors that are to be displayed simultaneously and wherein the array of pixels comprises curved color bands and wherein the array of pixels further comprises rectangular color bands that can change during a period shorter than a display period of the curved color bands.
4. The system of claim 1 wherein the light source comprises an arc lamp.
5. The system of claim 1 wherein the optical section includes an integrator rod.
6. The system of claim 1 and further comprising a second optical section arranged between the color wheel and the spatial light modulator.
7. The system of claim 6 wherein the second optical section includes a first lens and a second lens such that light from the color wheel is transmitted through the first lens and the second lens.
8. The system of claim 1 wherein the color wheel has a color pattern in a spiral of Archimedes.
9. The system of claim 8 wherein the color wheel includes a red band, a blue band and a green band.
10. The system of claim 9 wherein the color wheel further comprises a white or secondary color band.
11. The system of claim 8 wherein the color wheel has a diameter no greater than about 45 mm.
12. The system of claim 11 wherein the color wheel has a diameter no greater than about 25 mm.
13. The system of claim 1 wherein the image data over a frame is generated to have 256 levels of intensity.
14. The system of claim 13 wherein the 256 levels are determined by eight control bits, wherein a state of the pixels in the array of pixels during an MSB time period are controlled by four of the eight control bits and the state of pixels may be changed for some period of time during the MSB time period in accordance with the other four of the control bits.
15. The system of claim 1 and further comprising a graphics memory with an output coupled to a data input of the spatial light modulator.
16. The system of claim 15 and further comprising a multiplexer with an output coupled to an input of the graphics memory.
17. The system of claim 16 and further comprising a digital video source with an output coupled to the multiplexer.
18. The system of claim 17 and further comprising processing circuitry coupled between the digital video source and the multiplexer.
19. The system of claim 18 wherein the processing circuitry includes red-green-blue-white hue correction circuit.
20. The system of claim 18 wherein the processing circuitry includes a degamma circuit.
21. The system of claim 18 wherein the processing circuitry includes a blue-noise STM circuit.
22. A display system comprising: a light source; a color wheel; an optical section arranged to receive light from the light source and direct the light toward the color wheel; a spatial light modulator arranged to receive the light from the color wheel and to direct image data toward a display, wherein the image data comprises an array of pixels arranged in rows and columns and wherein the array of pixels comprises pixels of at least three colors that are to be displayed simultaneously, wherein the image data comprises a plurality of bit slices, each of the plurality of bit slices having a variable position, and wherein the array of pixels comprises curved color bands and rectangular color bands; and processing circuitry providing the image data to the spatial light modulator, wherein the processing circuitry includes a secondary color boost/spoke light recapture circuit.
23. The system of claim 18 wherein the processing circuitry includes a noise-free boundary dispersion circuit.
24. The system of claim 1 and further comprising a sequencer with an output coupled to an input of the spatial light modulator.
25. The system of claim 1 and further comprising a processor with an output coupled to the input of a sequencer.
26. The system of claim 25 wherein the processor comprises a microprocessor.
27. The system of claim 26 and further comprising a digital video source, the digital video source providing timing and control data to the sequencer, the digital video source providing pixel data to the spatial light modulator.
