1. A method for transmitting acknowledgement (ACK) information from a base station in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system, the method comprising: spreading the ACK information separately from other control information by applying a sequence from a set of mutually orthogonal sequences; mapping the spread ACK information to subcarriers in a pattern for increasing diversity gain of the ACK information; encoding the other control information except the ACK information according to a channel encoding scheme without spreading; and multiplexing the spread ACK information mapped to the subcarriers with the encoded other control information to transmit the multiplexed information.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: additionally allocating an ACK channel when a number of terminals within a region of the base station exceeds an allowable range of a system parameter.

An apparatus for transmitting acknowledgement (ACK) information in a base station of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system, the apparatus comprising: a processor for spreading the ACK information separately from other control information by applying a sequence from a set of mutually orthogonal sequences; a subcarrier mapper for mapping the spread ACK information to subcarriers in a pattern for increasing diversity gain of the ACK information; an encoder for encoding the other control information except the ACK information according to a channel encoding scheme without spreading; a multiplexer for multiplexing the spread ACK information mapped to the subcarriers with the encoded other control information to transmit the multiplexed information; and a controller for controlling an operation of the subcarrier mapper.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein when a number of terminals within a region of the base station exceeds an allowable range of a system parameter, the controller additionally allocates an ACK channel.

A method for receiving acknowledgement (ACK) information in a terminal of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system, wherein the ACK information is spread by applying a sequence from a set of mutually orthogonal sequences prior to transmission of the ACK information, the method comprising: receiving and demultiplexing the ACK information and other control information from a radio channel, wherein the other control information except the ACK information is encoded according to a channel encoding scheme without spreading prior to transmission, and the ACK information is transmitted on a plurality of subcarriers mapped in a pattern to increase diversity prior to transmission; decoding the other control information according to the channel encoding scheme; and performing an inverse of the applying on the received ACK information.

The method of claim 22 , wherein the receiving and demultiplexing of the ACK information and the other control information comprises: demultiplexing the ACK information and the other control information; receiving the demultiplexed other control information through a designated path; and receiving the demultiplexed ACK information through another designated path.

An apparatus for receiving acknowledgement (ACK) information in a terminal of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system, wherein the ACK information is spread by applying a sequence from a set of mutually orthogonal sequences prior to transmission of the ACK information, the apparatus comprising: a reception module for receiving and demultiplexing ACK information and other control information from a radio channel, wherein the other control information except the ACK information is encoded according to a channel encoding scheme without spreading prior to transmission, and the ACK information is transmitted on a plurality of subcarriers mapped in a pattern to increase diversity prior to transmission; a decoder for decoding the other control information according to the channel encoding scheme; an inverse processor for performing an inverse of the applying on the received ACK information; and a controller for controlling an operation of the inverse processor.
