1

1. A first wireless device, comprising: a transmitter configured to transmit a request, to a second wireless device via a communication channel, for the second wireless device to (i) perform link adaptation on the communication channel, wherein performing the link adaptation includes determining parameters associated with an estimated quality of the communication channel, and (ii) determine, based on the parameters, a preferred modulation and coding scheme (MCS); and a receiver configured to receive a response from the second wireless device via the communication channel, wherein the response received by the receiver of the first wireless device includes the preferred MCS determined by the second wireless device and the parameters, wherein the transmitter is further configured to, based on the preferred MCS determined by the second wireless device and received from the second wireless device at the first wireless device, select an MCS for transmission of data from the first wireless device to the second wireless device via the communication channel.

2

2. The first wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the estimated quality of the communication channel includes a difference between (i) a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the transmitted request and (ii) a minimum SNR for transmission via the communication channel.

3

3. The first wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter selects a power level for transmission to the second wireless device via the communication channel based on at least one of the parameters.

4

4. The first wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the communication channel includes a radio frequency (RF) spectrum ranging from 57 gigahertz (GHz) to 64 GHz.

5

5. The first wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the MCS includes at least one of a modulation scheme and a data rate.

6

6. The first wireless device of claim 5 , wherein the modulation scheme includes single carrier (SC) modulation or orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation.

7

7. The first wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the estimated quality of the communication channel includes at least one of (i) a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), (ii) a receiver signal strength index (RSSI), and (iii) a channel strength index (CSI).

8

8. A system comprising: the first wireless device of claim 1 ; and the second wireless device.

9

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the second wireless device comprises: a receiver configured to receive the request from the first wireless device via the communication channel, and determine the parameters based on the request; and a transmitter configured to transmit the response to the first wireless device via the communication channel.

10

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the request is included in a first data packet.

11

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the request includes a sounding bit located in a preamble of the first data packet.

12

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the request is located in a transmitter training field or a receiver training field of the first data packet.

13

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the second wireless device determines the parameters based on the first data packet.

14

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first wireless device transmits a second data packet subsequent to waiting a predetermined period after having transmitted the first data packet.

15

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the second wireless device determines the parameters based on the second data packet.

16

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein: the first data packet further includes a request for acknowledgement by the second wireless device; and the second wireless device transmits an acknowledgement packet upon receiving the request for acknowledgement.

17

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the first wireless device transmits the second data packet subsequent to waiting the predetermined period after having received the acknowledgement packet.

18

18. A method, comprising: transmitting a request, from a first wireless device to a second wireless device via a communication channel, for the second wireless device to (i) perform link adaptation on the communication channel, wherein performing the link adaptation includes determining parameters associated with an estimated quality of the communication channel, and (ii) determine, based on the parameters, a preferred modulation and coding scheme (MCS); receiving a response from the second wireless device at the first wireless device via the communication channel, wherein the response received at the first wireless device includes the preferred MCS determined by the second wireless device and the parameters; and based on the preferred MCS determined by the second wireless device and received from the second wireless device at the first wireless device, selecting an MCS for transmission of data from the first wireless device to the second wireless device via the communication channel.

19

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the estimated quality of the communication channel includes a difference between (i) a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the transmitted request and (ii) a minimum SNR for transmission via the communication channel.

20

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the communication channel includes a radio frequency (RF) spectrum ranging from 57 gigahertz (GHz) to 64 GHz.
