Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.
1. A method used by a content provider that provides notification of content intended for a subscriber having a wireless transceiver configured to receive messages and retrieve remotely stored content, comprising: storing in a memory a plurality of items of content available to the wireless transceiver; causing transmission of a notification to a subscriber by paging call, the notification configured to: (1) include a content identifier specifying a particular item of content from among the plurality of items of content in the memory and a system address indicating a system to be contacted to trigger retrieval of the content, (2) formatted for display on the subscriber's wireless transceiver, and (3) enable the subscriber to request the particular item of content by responding with at least a portion of the notification to cause the particular item of content to be downloaded; causing error status information to be transmitted to the wireless transceiver from the system to be contacted to trigger retrieval of the content; and responsive to a transmission from the wireless transceiver, transmitting the particular item of content to the wireless transceiver following receipt from the wireless transceiver of a request that is based at least in part on the error status information.
2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising retrieving information from a home location register (HLR) that stores information pertaining to the wireless transceiver.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the notification further includes at least information about the subject of the particular item of content.
4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the notification further includes the name of the originator of the particular item of content.
5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a registered location and status of the wireless transceiver and thereafter causing transmission of the notification to the wireless transceiver.
6. The method of claim 5 , wherein determining the registered location and status of the wireless transceiver comprises retrieving information from a home location register (HLR).
7. The method of claim 5 , wherein determining the registered location and status of the wireless transceiver occurs without a user of the wireless transceiver supplying the location information.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the notification comprises a short message service (“SMS”) message.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein a content provider receives the content identifier and system address from a separate identification service.
10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising updating the particular item of content after the notification is caused to be transmitted without causing a new notification to be caused to be transmitted.
11. The method of claim 10 , further causing the updated particular item of content to be transmitted to the wireless transceiver after receiving a request corresponding to the originally-sent notification.
12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the notification and the request that is based at least in part on the error status information include addresses specific to the same mobile wireless transceiver.
13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the notification further identifies a type of the particular item of content.
14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the notification further includes an express time selected by the content provider stating when the particular item of content is available, wherein the express time is after the time the notification is caused to be transmitted to the subscriber.
15. A system that provides notification of content intended for a subscriber having a wireless transceiver configured to receive messages and retrieve remotely stored content, comprising: a memory configured to store a plurality of items of content available to the wireless transceiver; a first processor configured to cause transmission of a notification to a subscriber by paging call, the notification configured to: (1) include a content identifier specifying a particular item of content from among the plurality of items of content in the memory and a system address indicating a system to be contacted to trigger retrieval of the content; (2) formatted for display on the subscriber's wireless transceiver, and (3) enable the stored particular item of content to be downloaded; a second processor configured to cause error status information to be transmitted to the wireless transceiver from the system to be contacted to trigger retrieval of the content; and a third processor configured to transmit the particular item of content to the wireless transceiver responsive to a request from the wireless transceiver following receipt from the wireless transceiver of a request that is based at least in part on the error status information.
16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the notification further includes information about the subject of the particular item of content.
17. The system of claim 15 , the first processor being configured to determine the registered location and status of the wireless transceiver.
18. The system of claim 17 , the first processor being configured to determine the registered location and status of the wireless transceiver by retrieving registered location and the status information from a home location register (HLR).
19. The system of claim 17 , the first processor being configured to determine the registered location and status of the wireless transceiver without the user of the wireless transceiver manually supplying the registered location and status.
20. The system of claim 15 , wherein the notification comprises a short message service (“SMS”) message.
21. The system of claim 15 , wherein the particular item of content includes audio and visual information.
22. The system of claim 15 , further comprising a network interface configured to receive the system address from a separate identification service.
23. The system of claim 15 , wherein the memory is configured to store an updated version of the particular item of content after the notification is caused to be transmitted without causing a new notification to be transmitted.
24. The system of claim 23 , wherein the third processor is configured to cause the updated version of the particular item of content to be transmitted to the wireless transceiver.
25. The system of claim 17 , wherein the notification and the request that is based at least in part on the error status information include addresses specific to the same mobile wireless transceiver.
26. The system of claim 17 , wherein the notification further identifies a data type of the particular item of content.
27. The system of claim 17 , wherein the notification further includes an express time stating when the particular item of content is available, wherein the express time is after the time the notification is caused to be transmitted to the subscriber.
