1. A computer-implemented method of reviewing prior art, the method comprising using one or more processors to perform the following operations: identifying at least a first patent concept related to an area of technology in the prior art, the first patent concept automatically provided from an ontology of patent concepts stored in a database; receiving a search query including the first patent concept; conducting an initial search as a function of the search query; generating a first set of search results, wherein the first set of search results includes information relating to two or more of the following: most-cited prior art owners in the area of technology, the most-cited prior art owners determined by comparing an owner citation frequency of each prior art owner of a set of prior art owners cited within the area of technology; most-cited prior art references in the area of technology, the most-cited prior art references determined by comparing a reference citation frequency of each prior art reference of a set of prior art references cited within the area of technology; and keywords differentiating the first patent concept from the prior art; storing the first set of search results in a database; automatically conducting a subsequent search as a function of the search query, the subsequent search conducted at a predetermined interval after the initial search; generating a second set of search results corresponding to the first set of search results; comparing the first and second sets of search results to identify differences between the first set of search results and the second set of search results; communicating the differences in the search results to a user; and generating a patent activity profile for one or more entities based at least in part on the differences in the search results, wherein the patent activity profile monitors, and flags deviances from, at least of the one or more of the entity's patterns of: type of applications filed; location of applications filed; subject matter abandoned during prosecution; and instances or circumstances of annuity fee non-payment.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 further comprising: maintaining a patent matter database, wherein the patent matter database includes data about patent matters, the data including a claim set for at least one patent matter, and wherein the first patent concept relates to at least one feature of the claim set.

3

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the first patent concept includes at least one keyword present in the claim set.

4

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the first patent concept includes at least one scope concept present in the claim set.

5

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the first patent concept includes at least one keyword.

6

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the first patent concept includes at least one scope concept.

7

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , the method further comprising hosting an interactive website and receiving the search query from the user, and communicating the differences in the search results to the user, via the website.

8

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , further comprising providing a web-based search engine for searching the Internet.

9

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , including communicating the differences in the search results to the user in a handheld or mobile device.

10

10. A patent management system for reviewing prior art, the system comprising: a memory; a hardware-implemented input module including at least one processor for receiving a search query including at least a first patent concept related to an area of technology in the prior art, the first patent concept automatically provided from an ontology of patent concepts stored in a database; a search engine configured to run a first search as a function of the search query and generate a first set of search results, the search engine being further configured to automatically run a second search, as a function of the same search query, on a subsequent occasion to generate a second set of search results corresponding to the first set of search results, the subsequent search conducted at a predetermined interval after the initial search, wherein the first set of search results includes information relating to two or more of the following: most-cited prior art owners in the area of technology, the most-cited prior art owners determined by a comparison of an owner citation frequency of each prior art owner of a set of prior art owners cited within the area of technology; most-cited prior art references in the area of technology, the most-cited prior art references determined by a comparison of a reference citation frequency of each prior art reference of a set of prior art references cited within the area of technology; and keywords differentiating the first patent concept from the prior art; a hardware-implemented analytics module including at least one processor to compare the first and second sets of search results to identify differences in the search results, wherein the analytics module is further used to generate a patent activity profile for one or more entities based at least in part on the differences in the search results, wherein the patent activity profile monitors, and flags deviances from, one or more of the entity's patterns of: type of applications filed; location of applications filed; subject matter abandoned during prosecution; and instances or circumstances of annuity fee non-payment; and a hardware-implemented display module including at least one processor for communicating the differences in the search results to a user.

11

11. The system of claim 10 , further comprising: a patent matter database, wherein the patent matter database includes data about patent matters, the data including a claim set for at least one patent matter, and wherein the first patent concept relates to at least one feature of the claim set.

12

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first patent concept includes at least one keyword present in the claim set.

13

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first patent concept includes at least one scope concept present in the claim set.

14

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first patent concept includes at least one keyword.

15

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first patent concept includes at least one scope concept.

16

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the system is at least partly hosted on an interactive website such that the search query can be received from the user, and the search results can be communicated to the user, via one or more web pages hosted on the website.

17

17. The system of claim 16 , further comprising a web-based search engine for searching the Internet.

18

18. The system of claim 10 , wherein the display module is configured to communicate the differences in the search results to the user in a handheld or mobile device.

19

19. A patent management system comprising: a network; at least one database, accessible on the network, and including data relating to a field of prior art, and a server, operatively connected to the network, wherein the server includes: a processor, a memory, software executed on the processor to: receive a search query including at least a first patent concept related to an area of technology in the prior art, the first patent concept automatically provided from an ontology of patent concepts stored in a database; conduct an initial search of the at least one database as a function of the search query; generate a first set of search results, wherein the first set of search results includes information relating to two or more of the following: most-cited prior art owners in the area of technology, the most-cited prior art owners determined by a comparison of an owner citation frequency of each prior art owner of a set of prior art owners cited within the area of technology; most-cited prior art references in the area of technology, the most-cited prior art references determined by a comparison of a reference citation frequency of each prior art reference of a set of prior art references cited within the area of technology; and keywords differentiating the first patent concept from the prior art; store the first set of search results in a database; automatically conduct a subsequent search of the at least one database as a function of the search query, the subsequent search conducted at a predetermined interval after the initial search; generate a second set of search results corresponding to the first set of search results; compare the first and second sets of search results to identify differences in the search results; generate a patent activity profile for one or more entities based at least in part on the differences in the search results, wherein the patent activity profile monitors, and flags deviances from, one or more of the entity's patterns of: type of applications filed; location of applications filed; subject matter abandoned during prosecution; and instances or circumstances of annuity fee non-payment; and communicate the differences in the search results to a user.
