Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.
1. A method of operating a mobile device comprising: receiving an enable message at the mobile device which indicates a pending data message is available for retrieval from a host service, the pending data message comprising a body of text, wherein the enable message includes an identifier identifying the pending data message at the host service; opening a messaging application at the mobile device subsequent to the receiving of the enable message; and retrieving the pending data message from the host service using the identifier in response to the opening of the messaging application at the mobile device.
2. The method of claim 1 where the messaging application is an electronic mail application.
3. The method of claim 1 where the pending data message is an electronic mail message comprising the body of text.
4. The method of claim 1 where the opening of the messaging application commences a data session with the host service.
5. A mobile device comprising: a communication module at the mobile device having an interface adapted to receive an enable message which indicates a pending data message is available for retrieval from a host service, the pending data message comprising a body of text, wherein the enable message includes an identifier identifying the pending data message at the host service; a messaging application at the mobile device configured to receive the pending data message after the enable message is received at the communication module; and a data communication module at the mobile device adapted to receive the pending data message from the host service using the identifier in response to the opening of the messaging application at the mobile device.
6. The mobile device of claim 5 where the communication module is adapted to receive and process the enable message before the opening of the messaging application at the mobile device.
7. The mobile device of claim 5 where the pending data message comprises an electronic mail message comprising the body of text, and the messaging application comprises an e-mail application configured to receive the electronic mail message.
8. The mobile device of claim 5 where the communication module is programmed to communicate directly with the host service.
9. The mobile device of claim 5 where the data communication module includes a transmitter adapted to send a data message in response to receiving the pending data message.
10. A network based mobile communication architecture that selectively enables wireless data communication with a mobile device comprising: a server programmed to transmit an enable message to the mobile device via a wireless network, the enable message being indicative of a data message received at a host service server and destined for the mobile device, the data message comprising a body of text, the enable message including an identifier identifying the pending data message at the server; and the host services server programmed to process a message received from the mobile device to retrieve the data message using the identifier, wherein the message is received after the transmission of the enable message and an opening of a messaging application; where the host services server is programmed to transmit the data message comprising the body of the text to the mobile device.
11. The network based mobile communication architecture of claim 10 where the messaging application comprises a messaging module remote from the mobile device adapted to receive messages from at least one external mail server.
12. The network based mobile communication architecture of claim 10 where the server is programmed to transmit a plurality of enable messages indicative of the data message received at the host service server destined for the mobile device.
13. The network based mobile communication architecture of claim 10 where the server is programmed to transmit a plurality of enable messages indicative of a plurality of data messages received at the host service server destined for the mobile device.
14. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that enables communication with a mobile device via a wireless network, comprising: generating an enable message which indicates a pending data message is retrievable from a host service, the pending data message comprising a body of text, the enable message including an identifier identifying the pending data message at the server; commencing a data session with the mobile device pursuant to a transmission of the enable message using the identifier and an opening of a messaging application at the mobile device; and pursuant to the commencing of the data session, communicating with the mobile device via the host service.
15. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 where the communication with the mobile device occurs without use of a relay services node.
16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 further comprising instructions that retrieve the pending data message from the host service and transmit the pending data message to the mobile device.
17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 where the communicating comprises transmitting electronic mail messages comprising a body of text.
