An apparatus and method for bending or shaping orthodontic archwires or other medical devices into a complex, patient individual shape is described. The apparatus comprises of two moveable, compact, manipulators with, in total, at least three revolute joints defining three rotation axes and at least three prismatic joints defining at least three translation axes. Gripping tools are provided on the manipulators. The two manipulators are arranged to allow a relative movement in six degrees of freedom. A reduced complexity embodiment is also described having only one or two revolute joints.
Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.
1. A method of bending an archwire, comprising the steps of: a. relatively moving a first gripping tool and/or a second gripping tool to position the archwire, gripped by the first gripping tool, so that the archwire can be gripped by the second gripping tool at a portion of the archwire extending from a front of the first gripping tool; b. gripping the portion of the archwire extending to the front of the first gripping tool with the second gripping tool; c. moving both the first gripping tool and the second gripping tool relative to each other to deform the archwire into a desired shape; d. releasing the archwire from the first gripping tool; e. relatively moving the first gripping tool and/or the second gripping tool to position the archwire, gripped by the second gripping tool, so that the archwire can be gripped by the first gripping tool in the portion of the archwire, projecting to a back of the first gripping tool; f. releasing the archwire from the second gripping tool; and repeating steps a-f to produce a series of bends and/or twists in the archwire according to an archwire prescription to thereby produce an archwire of a desired configuration.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the archwire comprises a wire tube, and wherein the bending is done in a manner such that buckling in the wire tube is prevented.
3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising heating the wire tube during bending to prevent buckling in the wire tube.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first gripping tool is mounted to an end of a first manipulator, and wherein the second gripping tool is mounted to an end of a second manipulator.
5. A method of bending an archwire comprising a wire tube in a manner such that buckling in the wire tube is prevented, comprising the steps of: filling the wire tube with a substance capable of preventing buckling, including a liquid that is subsequently hardened, or compressed or a pressured gas; a. relatively moving a first gripping tool and/or a second gripping tool to position the archwire, gripped by the first gripping tool, so that the archwire can be gripped by the second gripping tool at a portion of the archwire extending from a front of the first gripping tool; b. gripping the portion of the archwire extending to the front of the first gripping tool with the second gripping tool; c. moving the first gripping tool and/or the second gripping tool relative to each other to deform the archwire into a desired shape; d. releasing the archwire from the first gripping tool; e. relatively moving the first gripping tool and/or the second gripping tool to position the archwire, gripped by the second gripping tool, so that the archwire can be gripped by the first gripping tool in the portion of the archwire projecting to a back of the first gripping tool; f. releasing the archwire from the second gripping tool; and repeating steps a-f to produce a series of bends and/or twists in the archwire according to an archwire prescription to thereby produce an archwire of a desired configuration.
