Technical Abstract

In one aspect of the present invention, an apparatus includes a head configured to write data to a tape, and a hardware controller coupled to the head. The controller is configured to cause the apparatus to copy a second data area on the tape as a third data area, the second data area corresponding to data in a first data area that has changed. The controller is also configured to cause the apparatus to store, on the tape, index information for identifying the third data area, and copy the first data area to the tape as a fourth data area separate from the third data area. The controller is also configured to cause the apparatus to store, on the tape, index information for identifying the fourth data area.

1. A product, comprising: a tape having data stored on the tape as a single file that includes a first data area and a second data area in at least a portion of the first data area, the tape having data stored in a third data area separate from the first data area, the third data area being a previously-changed portion of the data in the first data area that corresponds to the second data area, wherein the third data area is appended to the first data area.

2

2. The product according to claim 1 , wherein the tape has stored thereon a first index identifying extents of the first and second data areas.

3

3. A product, comprising: a tape having data stored on the tape as a single file that includes a first data area and a second data area in at least a portion of the first data area, the tape having data stored in a third data area separate from the first data area, the third data area being a previously-changed portion of the data in the first data area that corresponds to the second data area, wherein the tape has stored thereon a second index identifying extents of the first and third data areas.

4

4. The product according to claim 3 , wherein the extents in the second index enable exclusion of the second data area.

5

5. The product according to claim 3 , wherein the extents in the second index enable recreation of a version of the data saved previous to the version of the data stored in the first and second data areas.

6

6. The product according to claim 1 , wherein the second data area is within the first data area.

7

7. The product according to claim 1 , wherein the third data area is appended to the first data area before the first data area on the tape.

8

8. The product according to claim 1 , wherein the third data area is appended to the first data area after the first data area on the tape.

9

9. A product, comprising: a tape having data stored on the tape as a single file that includes a first data area and a second data area separate from the first data area, the data in the second data area being a previous version of the data stored in the first data area, the tape having stored thereon a first index identifying an extent of the first data area, the tape having stored thereon a second index identifying an extent of the second data area.

10

10. The product according to claim 9 , wherein the second data area is positioned after the first index.

11

11. The product according to claim 9 , wherein the second data area is appended to the first data area.
