Technical Abstract

Within a wireless network, feedback information from user equipment (UE) to a control node (eNodeB) is necessary to support various functions. A UE receives an allocation from the eNodeB comprising a plurality of periodic transmission instances for a channel quality indicator (CQI) and a schedule comprising a plurality of periodic transmission instances for a rank indicator (RI), wherein the CQI comprises RI and other CQI fields. The UE then transmits an RI without transmitting the other CQI fields in a transmission instance allocated for both RI and other CQI fields.

1

1. A method for transmission in a wireless network, comprising: receiving an allocation comprising a plurality of periodic transmission instances for reporting a channel quality indicator (CQI); receiving an allocation comprising a plurality of periodic transmission instances for reporting a rank indicator (RI); and transmitting a first RI report without transmitting a CQI report in a first transmission instance of the plurality of periodic transmission instances allocated for both reporting a RI and reporting a CQI.

2

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving a first control message indicating a mode of operation in a transmission instance allocated for both reporting a RI and reporting a CQI, wherein in the indicated mode of operation, the first RI report is transmitted without transmitting a CQI report in the transmission instance.

3

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein an ACKNAK is transmitted in the same transmission instance as the first RI report, wherein the ACK/NAK is transmitted by modulating a reference signal (RS) of the transmission instance.

4

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting both a second RI report and a CQI report in a second transmission instance of the plurality of periodic transmission instances allocated for both reporting a RI and reporting a CQI.

5

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the CQI report includes a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) index associated with a channel coding rate value and modulation scheme, and a precoding matrix indicator (PMI).

6

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the CQI report includes only a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) index associated with a channel coding rate value and modulation scheme.

7

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein a same channel resource is used for the transmission of both the RI report and the other CQI report.

8

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the channel resource corresponds to a selected cyclic shift of a designated sequence within a given physical resource block.

9

9. The method of claim 4 , wherein the second transmission instance comprises a plurality of single carrier orthogonal frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) symbols and furthermore, at least one SC-FDMA symbol is used for transmitting the second RI report and at least another SC-FDMA symbol is used for transmitting the CQI report.

10

10. An apparatus for use in a wireless network, comprising: a transmitter; a receiver; a processor controllably coupled to the transmitter and the receiver; a memory having instructions stored therein, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor cause the apparatus to: receive an allocation comprising a plurality of periodic transmission instances for reporting a channel quality indicator (CQI); receive an allocation comprising a plurality of periodic transmission instances for reporting a rank indicator (RI); and transmit a first RI report without transmitting the CQI report in a first transmission instance of the plurality of periodic transmission instances allocated for both reporting a RI and reporting a CQI.

11

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the memory has further instructions stored therein, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor cause the apparatus to: receive and store a control message indicating a mode of operation in a transmission instance allocated for both reporting a RI and reporting a CQI; and wherein in a first mode of operation, the apparatus transmits the first RI report without transmitting a CQI report in the transmission instance, and in a second mode of operation, the apparatus transmits both the first RI report and a portion of a CQI report in the transmission instance.

12

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , where the instructions also cause the apparatus to transmit both a second RI report and a CQI report in a second transmission instance of the plurality of periodic transmission instances allocated for both reporting a RI and reporting a CQI.

13

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the CQI report includes a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) index associated with a channel coding rate value and modulation scheme, and a precoding matrix indicator (PMI).

14

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the CQI report includes only a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) index associated with a channel coding rate value and modulation scheme.

15

15. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein a same channel resource is used for the transmission of both the second RI report and the CQI report, wherein the channel resource corresponds to a selected cyclic shift of a designated sequence within a given physical resource block.

16

16. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the second transmission instance comprises a plurality of single carrier orthogonal frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) symbols and furthermore, at least one SC-FDMA symbol is used for transmitting the second RI report and at least another SC-FDMA symbol is used for the transmitting the CQI reports.
