A method for manufacturing a light emitting device includes providing an intermediate member including: at least one light emitting element that includes a plurality of electrodes arranged at a same surface side thereof, and a covering member covering the at least on light emitting element such that at least a portion of a surface of each of the plurality of electrodes is exposed; forming a metal layer that continuously covers the exposed portion of each of the electrodes and the covering member; and removing a portion of the metal layer by irradiating the metal layer with laser light to form a plurality of external connection electrodes that are spaced apart from each other, each of the plurality of external connection electrodes having an area larger than an area of respective one of the plurality of electrodes.
Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.
1. A light emitting device comprising: a light emitting element that comprises a first electrode and a second electrode located at a lower surface of the light emitting element; a covering member having an upper surface, a lower surface, and a plurality of lateral surfaces extending from the upper surface to the lower surface, wherein the covering member covers the light emitting element such that at least a portion of a lower surface of each of the first electrode and the second electrode is exposed from the lower surface of the covering member and such that the lower surface of the covering member is flush with the exposed portion of the lower surface of each of the first electrode and the second electrode; first and second metal layers, each of which covers and directly contacts (i) the exposed portion of the lower surface of a respective one of the first and second electrodes, (ii) a respective portion of the lower surface of the covering member that is flush with the exposed portion of the lower surface of each of the first electrode and the second electrode, and (iii) at least one of the lateral surfaces of the covering member.
2. The light emitting device according to claim 1 , wherein: the plurality of lateral surfaces of the covering member includes a first lateral surface, a second lateral surface opposite the first lateral surface, a third lateral surface, and a fourth lateral surface opposite the third lateral surface; the first metal layer is disposed on the first lateral surface of the covering member, the second metal layer is disposed on the second lateral surface of the covering member.
3. The light emitting device according to claim 2 , wherein: a portion of the lower surface of the covering member located between the lower surfaces of the first electrode and the lower surface of the second electrode is exposed from the first and second metal layers.
4. The light emitting device according to claim 1 , wherein: the first and second metal layers are not disposed on at least one of the lateral surfaces of the covering member.
5. The light emitting device according to claim 1 , wherein: a distance between the first metal layer and the second metal layer is larger than a distance between the first electrode and the second electrode of the light emitting element.
6. The light emitting device according to claim 1 , wherein: each of the first metal layer and the second metal layer has a thickness in a range of 10 Å to 1,000 Å.
7. The light emitting device according to claim 1 , wherein each of the first metal layer and the second metal layer includes a plurality of layers.
8. The light emitting device according to claim 1 , wherein the covering member has a groove.
9. The light emitting device according to claim 1 , further comprising: a first light-transmissive member covering an upper surface of the light emitting element; and a second light-transmissive member covering lateral surfaces of the light emitting element, wherein the covering member covers lateral surfaces of the second light-transmissive member.
10. The light emitting device according to claim 9 , wherein the covering member directly contacts the lateral surfaces of the second light-transmissive member.
