Technical Abstract

A system comprises television equipment and a number of portable electronic devices. The television equipment includes a large display and control circuitry. The control circuitry receives media content and media guidance data for display on the display. The control circuitry also includes communication components for communicating with the portable electronic devices. The portable electronic devices are operable for displaying video and communicating with the television equipment method comprises the steps of receiving media guidance information with a first portable electronic device; transmitting at least some of the media guidance information from the first portable electronic device to the control circuitry of the television equipment; and displaying the media guidance information from the first portable electronic device on the display of the television equipment while simultaneously displaying media content or media guidance information received from a source other than the first portable electronic device.

1

1. A method for avoiding interruption of an application, the method comprising: receiving, at user equipment, application information from a first portable electronic device; generating for display, on a display screen accessible to the user equipment, the application based on the application information; determining that a current time matches a time when media content is scheduled to be displayed; and in response to the determining that the current time matches the time when media content is scheduled to be displayed, determining, based on the application information, whether to interrupt the display of the application; and in response to determining to not interrupt the display of the application, generating for simultaneous display, on the display screen, the application in a first sub-region of the display screen and the media content in a second sub-region of the display screen.

2

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving, at the user equipment, set-up information transmitted by the first portable electronic device; and identifying, based on the set-up information, the first portable electronic device as a game player.

3

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein generating for simultaneous display the application in the first sub-region and the media content in the second sub-region comprises identifying the first portable electronic device as the game player.

4

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising: generating for display, on the display screen, a user interface for editing the set-up information; receiving, at the user equipment, the set-up information that has been edited using the display screen; and transmitting the set-up information to the first portable electronic device.

5

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the current time matches the time when the media content is scheduled to be displayed comprises receiving from a second portable electronic device media guidance data indicating the time when the media content is scheduled to be displayed.

6

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the current time matches the time when the media content is scheduled to be displayed comprises: receiving, at the user equipment, an input to schedule for display the media content at the time; generating media guidance data indicating the time when the media content is scheduled to be displayed; and storing the media guidance data in memory.

7

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein determining that the current time matches the time when the media content is scheduled to be displayed further comprises: receiving, at the user equipment, a signal from the second portable electronic device; and in response to receiving the signal from the second portable electronic device, retrieving the media guidance data associated with the second portable electronic device from the memory.

8

8. The method of claim 6 , further comprising: receiving, at the user equipment, a command from the second portable electronic device to transmit a portion of the media guidance data to the first portable electronic device; and transmitting, from the user equipment, the portion of the media guidance data to the first portable electronic device.

9

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: selecting a plurality of users associated with the user equipment; and dividing the display screen into a plurality of sub-regions such that a number of the plurality of sub-regions equals a number of the plurality of users, wherein the plurality of sub-regions includes the first sub-region and the second sub-region.

10

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein selecting the plurality of users associated with the user equipment comprises receiving, at the user equipment, a plurality of user identifiers that identify the plurality of users.

11

11. A system for avoiding interruption of an application, the system comprising control circuitry of user equipment configured to: receive, at the user equipment, application information from a first portable electronic device; generate for display, on a display screen accessible to the user equipment, the application based on the application information; determine that a current time matches a time when media content is scheduled to be displayed; and in response to the determining that the current time matches the time when media content is scheduled to be displayed, determine, based on the application information, whether to interrupt the display of the application; and in response to determining to not interrupt the display of the application, generate for simultaneous display, on the display screen, the application in a first sub-region of the display screen and the media content in a second sub-region of the display screen.

12

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to: receive, at the user equipment, set-up information transmitted by the first portable electronic device; and identify, based on the set-up information, the first portable electronic device as a game player.

13

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is configured, when generating for simultaneous display the application in the first sub-region and the media content in the second sub-region, to identify the first portable electronic device as the game player.

14

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to: generate for display, on the display screen, a user interface for editing the set-up information; receive the set-up information that has been edited using the display screen; and transmit the set-up information to the first portable electronic device.

15

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured, when determining that the current time matches the time when the media content is scheduled to be displayed, to receive, from a second portable electronic device, media guidance data indicating the time when the media content is scheduled to be displayed.

16

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured, when determining that the current time matches the time when the media content is scheduled to be displayed, to: receive an input to schedule for display the media content at the time; generate media guidance data indicating the time when the media content is scheduled to be displayed; associate the media guidance data with a second portable electronic device; and store the media guidance data in memory.

17

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when determining that the current time matches the time when the media content is scheduled to be displayed, to: receive a signal from the second portable electronic device; and in response to receiving the signal from the second portable electronic device, retrieve the media guidance data associated with the second portable electronic device from the memory.

18

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to: receive a command from the second portable electronic device to transmit a portion of the media guidance data to the first portable electronic device; and transmit the portion of the media guidance data to the first portable electronic device.

19

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to: select a plurality of users associated with the user equipment; and divide the display screen into a plurality of sub-regions such that a number of the plurality of sub-regions equals a number of the plurality of users, wherein the plurality of sub-regions includes the first sub-region and the second sub-region.

20

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the control circuitry is configured, when selecting the plurality of users associated with the user equipment, to receive a plurality of user identifiers that identify the plurality of users.
