Technical Abstract

A system that incorporates the subject disclosure may include, for example, a device comprising a memory to store instructions and a processor coupled to the memory, wherein responsive to executing the instructions, the processor performs operations. The operations comprise receiving signals over a spectrum of frequencies, providing location data of the device to a base station, receiving a request from a base station to perform a spectral analysis of the signals, detecting an interference among the signals, and providing, in response to the request, data to the base station regarding a source of the interference, wherein the data comprises a location of the source relative to the device, spectral data for identifying the source, and a time a frequency of occurrence of the interference. Other embodiments are disclosed.

1

1. A device comprising: a processing system including a processor; and a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations comprising: receiving a plurality of signals; performing a spectral analysis of the plurality of signals; detecting, according to the spectral analysis, an interference among the plurality of signals; providing a time of occurrence of the interference, a frequency of occurrence of the interference, or a combination thereof, to a remote system for identification of a source of the interference; and providing information about the spectral analysis to the remote system for identification of the source of the interference.

2

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is selected by the remote system from among a plurality of mobile devices for performing the spectral analysis based on a location of the device, and wherein the performing of the spectral analysis is in response to receiving a request from the remote system.

3

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein each of the plurality of mobile devices respectively provides information regarding a location thereof.

4

4. The device of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of mobile devices and the remote system comprise a diagnostic system having access to a database of interference sources including spectral profiles.

5

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the diagnostic system identifies the source of the interference based on a comparison of spectral data from the spectral analysis of the plurality of signals and the spectral profiles.

6

6. The device of claim 2 , wherein the device and a second device of the plurality of mobile devices are located within a predetermined distance from each other, and the device is selected according to a random selection between the device and the second device.

7

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the detecting the interference comprises detecting the interference based on a threshold relative to a baseline power level.

8

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the remote system determines a location of the source of the interference according to location information of the device and location information provided by one or more other devices detecting the source of the interference.

9

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise: receiving, from a plurality of mobile devices, the time of occurrence of the interference, the frequency of occurrence of the interference, or a combination thereof.

10

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the time of occurrence of the interference and the frequency of occurrence of the interference are based on a time stamp provided by the plurality of mobile devices.

11

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the remote system comprises a base station, and wherein receiving the plurality of signals comprises receiving the plurality of signals over a communication channel.

12

12. A method comprising: receiving, by a processing system comprising a processor of a communication device, a plurality of signals; performing, by the processing system, a spectral analysis of the signals in response to receiving a request from a remote system; detecting, by the processing system according to the spectral analysis, an interference among the plurality of signals; identifying, by the processing system, a source of the interference; and providing, by the processing system, a time of occurrence of the interference, a frequency of occurrence of the interference, or a combination thereof, to the remote system for identifying the source of the interference.

13

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the communication device is selected by the remote system from among a plurality of mobile devices for performing the spectral analysis based on a location of the communication device.

14

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of mobile devices and the remote system comprise a diagnostic system having access to a database of interference sources including spectral profiles.

15

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the diagnostic system identifies the source of the interference based on a comparison of spectral data from the spectral analysis of the plurality of signals and the spectral profiles.

16

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising: determining, by the processing system, the time of occurrence of the interference, the frequency of occurrence of the interference, or a combination thereof, for identifying the source of the interference.

17

17. A method, comprising: sending, by a processing system including a processor of a base station, a request to a set of communication devices to perform a spectral analysis of signals; receiving, by the processing system, data provided by the set of communication devices in response to the request and in accordance with the spectral analysis performed by the set of communication devices, wherein the data comprises location data and spectral data; and identifying, by the processing system, a source of interference based on a comparison of the spectral data and spectral profiles of interference sources.

18

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising selecting, by the processing system, the set of communication devices from a plurality of communication devices, wherein the selecting is based on respective locations of the set of communication devices.

19

19. The method of claim 17 , further comprising generating, by the processing system, a report including information regarding the interference, wherein the report is provided to a diagnostic system to mitigate effects of the interference.

20

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the data comprises a time of occurrence of the interference, a frequency of occurrence of the interference, or a combination thereof.
