1

1. A gaming system comprising: a processor; and a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to: prior to a first play of a game, cause a display, by a display device, of: a plurality of ranked game outcomes comprising a first ranked game outcome and a second ranked game outcome having a higher ranking than the first ranked game outcome, and a persistent supplemental award associated with the first ranked game outcome, and responsive to an occurrence of a persistent supplemental award ranked game outcome increment event in association with the first play of the game: disassociate the persistent supplemental award from being associated with the first ranked game outcome, and associate the persistent supplemental award with the second ranked game outcome for a second play of the game.

2

2. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the persistent supplemental award ranked game outcome increment event occurs if a game outcome determined for the first play of the game is a losing game outcome.

3

3. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein when executed by the processor responsive to a game outcome determined for the first play of the game being the first ranked game outcome, the instructions cause the processor to cause the persistent supplemental award to be provided in association with the first play of the game.

4

4. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein when executed by the processor responsive to an occurrence of a persistent supplemental award reset event when the persistent supplemental award is associated with the second ranked game outcome, the instructions cause the processor to: disassociate the persistent supplemental award from being associated with the second ranked game outcome, and associate the persistent supplemental award with the first ranked game outcome for a third play of the game.

5

5. The gaming system of claim 4 , wherein the persistent supplemental award ranked game outcome increment event occurs if a determined game outcome is a losing game outcome and the persistent supplemental award reset event occurs if the determined game outcome is a winning game outcome.

6

6. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein when executed by the processor responsive to the occurrence of the persistent supplemental award ranked game outcome increment event, the instructions cause the processor to modify an amount of the persistent supplemental award.

7

7. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein when executed by the processor responsive to an occurrence of the persistent supplemental award ranked game outcome increment event in association with the second play of the game, the instructions cause the processor to disassociate the persistent supplemental award from being associated with the second ranked game outcome, and associate the persistent supplemental award with a third ranked game outcome for a third play of the game, the third ranked game outcome having a higher ranking than the first ranked game outcome.

8

8. The gaming system of claim 1 wherein when executed by the processor responsive to an occurrence of an additional persistent supplemental award event, the instructions cause the processor to associate another persistent supplemental award with one of the plurality of ranked game outcomes.

9

9. The gaming system of claim 8 , wherein when executed by the processor responsive to an occurrence of a persistent supplemental award reset event, the instructions cause the processor to remove the other persistent supplemental award from being associated with any of the plurality of ranked game outcomes.

10

10. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the first ranked game outcome is statically associated with a first award and the second ranked game outcome is statically associated with a second award.

11

11. The gaming system of claim 1 , further comprising an acceptor, wherein when executed by the processor, the plurality of instructions cause the processor to, responsive to a physical item being received via the acceptor, modify a credit balance based on a monetary value associated with the received physical item, and responsive to a cashout input being received, cause an initiation of any payout associated with the credit balance.

12

12. A gaming system comprising: a processor; and a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to: during a first period of time, cause a display, by a display device, of a first paytable associated with a first play of a game, the first paytable including a plurality of ranked game outcomes, a plurality of awards statically associated with the plurality of ranked game outcomes and a persistent supplemental award dynamically associated with a first one of the plurality of ranked game outcomes, during a second period of time after a first occurrence of a persistent supplemental award ranked game outcome increment event, cause a display, by the display device, of a second paytable associated with a second play of the game, the second paytable including the plurality of ranked game outcomes, the plurality of awards statically associated with the plurality of ranked game outcomes and the persistent supplemental award dynamically associated with a second, different one of the plurality of ranked game outcomes, during a third period of time after a second occurrence of a persistent supplemental award ranked game outcome increment event, cause a display, by the display device, of a third paytable associated with a third play of the game, the second paytable including the plurality of ranked game outcomes, the plurality of awards statically associated with the plurality of ranked game outcomes and the persistent supplemental award dynamically associated with a third, different one of the plurality of ranked game outcomes, and during a fourth period of time after an occurrence of a persistent supplemental award reset event, cause a display, by the display device, of the first paytable associated with a fourth play of the game.

13

13. A method of operating a gaming system, the method comprising: prior to a first play of a game, displaying, by a display device: a plurality of ranked game outcomes comprising a first ranked game outcome and a second ranked game outcome having a higher ranking than the first ranked game outcome, and a persistent supplemental award associated with the first ranked game outcome, and responsive to an occurrence of a persistent supplemental award ranked game outcome increment event in association with the first play of the game: disassociating, by a processor, the persistent supplemental award from being associated with the first ranked game outcome, and associating, by the processor, the persistent supplemental award with the second ranked game outcome for a second play of the game.

14

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the persistent supplemental award ranked game outcome increment event occurs if a game outcome determined for the first play of the game is a losing game outcome.

15

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising, responsive to a game outcome determined for the first play of the game being the first ranked game outcome, causing the persistent supplemental award to be provided in association with the first play of the game.

16

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising, responsive to an occurrence of a persistent supplemental award reset event when the persistent supplemental award is associated with the second ranked game outcome: disassociating, by the processor, the persistent supplemental award from being associated with the second ranked game outcome, and associating, by the processor, the persistent supplemental award with the first ranked game outcome for a third play of the game.

17

17. The method of claim 13 , further comprising, responsive to the occurrence of the persistent supplemental award ranked game outcome increment event, modifying, by the processor, an amount of the persistent supplemental award.

18

18. The method of claim 13 , further responsive to an occurrence of the persistent supplemental award ranked game outcome increment event in association with the second play of the game, disassociating, by the processor, the persistent supplemental award from being associated with the second ranked game outcome, and associating, by the processor, the persistent supplemental award with a third ranked game outcome for a third play of the game, the third ranked game outcome having a higher ranking than the first ranked game outcome.

19

19. The method of claim 13 further comprising, responsive to an occurrence of an additional persistent supplemental award event, associating, by the processor, another persistent supplemental award with one of the plurality of ranked game outcomes.

20

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising, responsive to an occurrence of a persistent supplemental award reset event, removing, by the processor, the other persistent supplemental award from being associated with any of the plurality of ranked game outcomes.
