Technical Abstract

A target marking system includes a light source configured to emit a beam of thermal radiation and to impinge the beam onto a target. The system also includes a detector configured to collect radiation passing from the target to the detector along a path. The radiation passing from the target in response to impingement of the beam onto the target. The system further includes an optics assembly disposed optically upstream of the detector along the path. The optics assembly includes at least one of an afocal power changer, a camera objective, a catadioptric lens, and a zoom system configured to condition the radiation passing from the target to the detector.

Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.

1

1. A system, comprising: a housing defining an interior space and an orifice; a coherent light source disposed within the interior space, the coherent light source configured to emit a divergent beam of radiation in a single wavelength band; and an optics assembly configured to: receive the divergent beam, increase a divergence of the received divergent beam to an increased divergence, and direct the divergent beam to exit the interior space via the orifice and with the increased divergence.

2

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises a portable housing configured to be connected to an article worn by a user of the system.

3

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the single wavelength band comprises one of the short-wave infrared band, the mid-wave infrared band, or the long-wave infrared band.

4

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a controller operably connected to the coherent light source, the controller being configured to: operate the coherent light source in at least one of a first duty cycle, or a second duty cycle different from the first duty cycle; and cause the coherent light source to emit the divergent beam of radiation with a desired frequency signature.

5

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the controller is configured to enable a user of the system to modify at least one of a frequency of the divergent beam, or a pulse pattern of the divergent beam.

6

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the interior space of the housing is hermetically sealed, and at least one component of the optics assembly is disposed within the housing.

7

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the optics assembly comprises at least one window disposed proximate the orifice.

8

8. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an activation device configured to receive an input, and to activate the coherent light source in response to the input.

9

9. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an active cooling element disposed within the housing and in thermal contact with the coherent light source.

10

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the coherent light source comprises a first coherent light source and the single wavelength band comprises a first single wavelength band, the system further comprising: a second coherent light source disposed within the housing and configured to emit an additional divergent beam of radiation in a second single wavelength band.

11

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the second single wavelength band is different from the first single wavelength band.

12

12. A system, comprising: a portable housing defining an interior space and an orifice; a coherent light source disposed within the interior space, the coherent light source configured to emit a divergent beam of radiation in a single wavelength band and having a first divergence; an optics assembly configured to: receive the divergent beam, increase a divergence of the divergent beam to a second divergence greater than the first divergence, and direct the divergent beam to exit the interior space via the orifice and with the second divergence; and a controller operably connected to the coherent light source, the controller being configured to modify at least one of a frequency of the divergent beam or a pulse pattern of the divergent beam based at least in part on a received control signal.

13

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the controller is disposed within the housing.

14

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the optics system comprises one of a diffraction grating or a wavelength beam combiner disposed optically downstream from a collimating lens.

15

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the optics assembly comprises an adjustment window that enables manual alignment of the divergent beam as the divergent beam exits the interior space.

16

16. The system of claim 12 , further comprising an active cooling element operably connected to the controller and in thermal contact with the coherent light source.

17

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the single wavelength band comprises one of the short-wave infrared band, the mid-wave infrared band, or the long-wave infrared band.

18

18. The system of claim 12 , wherein the coherent light source comprises a first coherent light source and the single wavelength band comprises a first single wavelength band, the system further comprising: a second coherent light source disposed within the housing and configured to emit an additional divergent beam of radiation in a second single wavelength band different from the first single wavelength band.

19

19. A method, comprising: causing, with a controller, a coherent light source disposed within a portable housing to emit a divergent beam of radiation in a single wavelength band and having a first divergence; receiving the divergent beam with an optics assembly coupled to the housing; increasing a divergence of the divergent beam, with the optics assembly, from the first divergence to a second divergence greater than the first divergence, and directing, with the optics assembly, the divergent beam to exit the housing with the second divergence, wherein the controller is configured to receive a control signal, and modify at least one of a frequency of the divergent beam or a pulse pattern of the divergent beam based at least in part on the control signal.

20

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising: receiving, with the controller, an input indicative of a selection of one of the coherent light source or an additional coherent light source disposed within the housing; and causing the coherent light source to emit the divergent beam based at least in part on the input.
