Technical Abstract

An entertainment device initiates a configuration process of a controlling device in response to a change in an audio visual entertainment system configuration in which at least one of a plurality devices is connected to the entertainment device as an audio and/or visual source and at least one of the plurality of devices is connected to the entertainment device as an audio and/or visual output destination for the entertainment device.

1

1. A method for configuring a controlling device performed by a media switch device having a plurality of input ports and an output port, comprising: receiving from the controlling device a communication indicative of a selection of a one of the plurality of input ports; and in response to the communication, internally connecting the one of the plurality of input ports to the output port and transmitting to the controlling device data indicative of at least a type for and a brand of a media source appliance coupled to the one of the plurality of input ports whereupon the controlling device will use the data indicative of at least the type for and the brand of the media source appliance to configure itself to transmit commands to the media source appliance in response to activations of predetermined input elements of the controlling device.

2

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising causing a media source appliance selection menu to be displayed on a media rendering appliance coupled to the output port and wherein the communication indicative of the selection of the one of the plurality of input ports comprises a media source appliance selection menu navigation command.

3

3. The method as recited in claim 2 , further comprising causing the media source appliance selection menu to be displayed on the media rendering appliance coupled to the output port in response to a receipt of an activity selection command from the controlling device.

4

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising causing a power on command to be issued to the media source appliance in response to a determination that the media source appliance is powered off when the communication is received.

5

5. The method as recited in claim 4 , comprising transmitting an instruction to the controlling device to cause the power on command to be issued to the media source appliance.

6

6. The method as recited in claim 4 , further comprising causing a power off command to be issued to a further media source appliance coupled to a further one of the plurality of input ports in response to a determination that the further media source appliance is powered on when the communication is received.

7

7. The method as recited in claim 6 , comprising transmitting an instruction to the controlling device to cause the power off command to be issued to the further media source appliance.

8

8. A media switch device, comprising: a plurality of input ports; an output port; a processor; and a memory storing instructions executable by the processor, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the switch device to: respond to a communication received from a controlling device indicative of a selection of a one of the plurality of input ports by internally connecting the one of the plurality of input ports to the output port and by transmitting to the controlling device data indicative of at least a type for and a brand of a media source appliance coupled to the one of the plurality of input ports whereupon the controlling device will use the data indicative of at least the type for and the brand of the media source appliance to configure itself to transmit commands to the media source appliance in response to activations of predetermined input elements of the controlling device.

9

9. The switching device as recited in claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the processing device, further cause a media source appliance selection menu to be displayed on a media rendering appliance coupled to the output port and wherein the communication indicative of the selection of the one of the plurality of input ports comprises a media source appliance selection menu navigation command.

10

10. The switching device as recited in claim 9 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the processing device, further cause the media source appliance selection menu to be displayed on the media rendering appliance coupled to the output port in response to a receipt of an activity selection command from the controlling device.

11

11. The switching device as recited in claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the processing device, further cause a power on command to be issued to the media source appliance in response to a determination that the media source appliance is powered off when the communication is received.

12

12. The switching device as recited in claim 11 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the processing device, further cause a transmission of an instruction to the controlling device to cause the power on command to be issued to the media source appliance.

13

13. The switching device as recited in claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the processing device, further cause a power off command to be issued to a further media source appliance coupled to a further one of the plurality of input ports in response to a determination that the further media source appliance is powered on when the communication is received.

14

14. The switching device as recited in claim 13 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the processing device, further cause a transmission of an instruction to the controlling device to cause the power off command to be issued to the further media source appliance.
