A method, apparatus and system for social networking is provided. In an embodiment, the system comprises a plurality of mobile devices that can directly connect to each other via a peer-to-peer connection. The devices can additionally connect to a server. The server maintains a profile schema which can be used to generate profiles for users for each of the mobile devices. Electronic devices are paired based on a shared key maintained in an application loaded on the first electronic device and the second electronic device.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein a display of the first electronic device provides a visual notification of the service accessed by the second electronic device comprising a digital picture of a user associated with the second electronic device.
3. The system of claim 1, wherein the service comprises enabling a file sharing function between the first and second electronic devices.
4. The system of claim 3, wherein the peer-to-peer network comprises a Bluetooth communication protocol.
6. The system of claim 5, wherein the peer-to-peer network comprises a Bluetooth communication protocol.
7. The system of claim 6, wherein a display of the first of the plurality of electronic devices provides a ranked listing of some of the others of the plurality of electronic devices.
8. The system of claim 7, wherein the ranked listing is ordered according to values associated with the said conceptual distance.
