Image generation using a hierarchical, model-based system includes generating a first region of an image using a first neural network model. The first region of the image is provided to a second neural network model as input. A second region of the image is generated using the second neural network model. The second region of the image shares a boundary with at least a portion of the first region of the image.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 2, wherein the guide data defines a location of the first region of the image relative to the second region of the image.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the first region of the image is a mouth region of an avatar and the second region of the image is a head region of the avatar.
10. The system of claim 9, wherein the guide data defines a location of the first region of the image relative to the second region of the image.
11. The system of claim 8, wherein the first set of one or more data modalities includes speech and the second set of one or more data modalities includes head position.
12. The system of claim 8, wherein the first region of the image is a mouth region of an avatar and the second region of the image is a head region of the avatar.
16. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the first set of one or more data modalities includes speech and the second set of one or more data modalities includes head position.
