A method for adapting a continuous time equalizer (CTE) includes determining a gain of a discrete time equalizer (DTE) and determining whether the gain has increased or decreased by more than the threshold amount. Responsive to determining that the gain has increased or decreased by more than the threshold amount, the method includes sequentially configuring the CTE for multiple CTE settings such that gain of the CTE is caused to increase or decrease in a same direction with the change in gain of the DTE. The method also includes determining a separate figure of merit (FOM) for each of the multiple CTE settings and selecting a new CTE setting from the multiple CTE settings based on the FOM for each of the multiple CTE settings.

3. The receiver circuitry of claim 1, wherein the DFE includes a feed-forward equalizer (FFE).

11. The receiver circuitry of claim 1, wherein the logic circuitry includes a microcontroller.
12. The receiver circuitry of claim 1, wherein the receiver circuitry_is included in a retimer.
14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the DTE includes a feed-forward equalizer (FFE) having an input coupled to the output of the CTE.
15. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the gain is determined at a Nyquist frequency of the apparatus.
16. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the CTE includes continuous time linear equalizer (CTLE).
17. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the logic circuitry is configured to compare the change in the gain of the DTE to the first and second thresholds by determining a ratio of a current gain to a previous gain and comparing the ratio to the first and second thresholds.
19. The method of claim 18, wherein the gain of the DTE is a function of a Fourier transform of a frequency response of the DTE.
