Technical Abstract

A method for utilizing a lubricating oil composition in which the content of a metal-based cleaning agent (X) having a base value of 100 mgKOH/g or less is 630 mass ppm or less in terms of metal atoms, and the content of sulfated ash is 1.5 mass % or less. The method includes measuring at least one physical property value among the capacitance and the dielectric constant of the lubricating oil composition while using the lubricating oil composition, and evaluating the progress of degradation of the lubricating oil composition.

1. A method for using a lubricating oil composition, comprising: measuring a value of at least one physical property selected from an electrostatic capacity and a dielectric constant of a lubricating oil composition in use; and evaluating a progress of degradation of the lubricating oil composition from the value of at least one physical property selected from the electrostatic capacity and the dielectric constant of the lubricating oil composition, wherein a content of a metal-based detergent having a base number of 100 mgKOH/g or less is 630 mass ppm or less in terms of metal atoms in the lubricating oil composition, a content of sulfated ash is 1.5 mass % or less in the lubricating oil composition, and the measuring of the value of at least one physical property comprising measuring the value using at least one comb-type electrode at a single frequency of from 20 Hz to 120 Hz.

2. A method for evaluating degradation of a lubricating oil composition, comprising: measuring a value of at least one physical property selected from an electrostatic capacity and a dielectric constant of a lubricating oil composition; and evaluating a progress of degradation of the lubricating oil composition from the value of at least one physical property selected from the electrostatic capacity and the dielectric constant of the lubricating oil composition, wherein a content of a metal-based detergent having a base number of 100 mgKOH/g or less is 630 mass ppm or less in terms of metal atoms in the lubricating oil composition, a content of sulfated ash is 1.5 mass % or less in the lubricating oil composition, and the measuring of the value of at least one physical property includes measuring the value using at least one comb-type electrode at a single frequency of from 20 Hz to 120 Hz.

3

3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the measuring includes measuring the value at any point in time or continuously while the lubricating oil composition is in use.

4

4. A lubricating oil composition, wherein a content of a metal-based detergent having a base number of 100 mgKOH/g or less is 630 mass ppm or less in terms of metal atoms in the lubricating oil composition, a content of sulfated ash is 1.5 mass % or less in the lubricating oil composition, the lubricating oil composition has a degraded state presented by measuring at least one physical property selected from an electrostatic capacity and a dielectric constant thereof, and the measuring of the at least one physical property includes measuring the value using at least one comb-type electrode at a single frequency of from 20 Hz to 120 Hz.

5

5. The lubricating oil composition according to claim 4, wherein when the lubricating oil composition is continuously used immediately from a start of use, at least one of the electrostatic capacity and the dielectric constant of the lubricating oil composition increases with time from the start of use.

6

6. An apparatus for measuring a value of at least one physical property selected from an electrostatic capacity and a dielectric constant of the lubricating oil composition of claim 4, comprising: a measurement unit comprising circuitry configured to measure a value of the physical property at a predetermined point in time; and a recording section comprising circuitry configured to record the value of the physical property measured by the measurement unit, wherein the circuitry of the measurement unit includes at least one comb-type electrode.

7

7. The measurement apparatus according to claim 6, further comprising: an evaluation section comprising circuitry configured to evaluate a progress of degradation of the lubricating oil composition based on the value of the physical property recorded in the recording section.
