This application claims the benefit of the filing date of British Patent Application Serial No. GB2404048.7, filed Mar. 21, 2024, for “A Sanding Device.”
The present disclosure related to a sanding device, in particular, a device or a user to sand a surface such as a wall or ceiling; more particularly but not exclusively at an inconvenient distance from the user.
Many people in many societies are increasingly prone to work on property, be that in a professional or amateur capacity.
Aside from more skilled tasks, much improvement may be achieved from aesthetic improvements to properties, for example, decoration, sanding and painting or staining with varnish or similar, or papering.
It can be difficult, particularly in older style properties, that are likely to be greatly deserving, to reach parts of rooms, walls or ceilings.
As a result, many decorating implements, such as paint rollers, tend to have extension pole attachment means. Sanding down in preparation for painting or papering can be problematic, however.
AU 2012 101 702 (WONG) discloses a hand-held implement for cleaning, polishing or sanding comprising a handle portion, adapted to be gripped by a user, releasably connectable to a head portion, adapted to have at least one working surface configured for cleaning, polishing or sanding, the head portion rotatable in relation to the handle portion between at least two positions, a first locked position wherein the head portion is connected to the handle portion and a second unlocked position.
U.S. Pat. No. 8,182,317 (ANO) discloses a handheld sanding implement comprising: (a) a handle: wherein the handle is elongated; wherein the handle has a plurality of finger grooves at a first distal end of the handle; (b) a spinning head; wherein the spinning head is attached to a second distal end of the handle by a grooved notch in both the handle and the spinning head, and of which enables the spinning head to rotate about the handle; wherein the spinning head has a plurality of sanding pads; wherein each sanding pad has a sanding surface.
CN 2 792 706 (LIANG) discloses a grind wall abrasive paper clamp wherein: the handle is comprised of a lower clamping plate, and upper clamping plate and a handle, wherein the upper clamping plate and the lower clamping plate are matched, a fastening device is arranged between the upper clamping plate and the lower clamping plate, a bearing seat is arranged in the middle of the lower clamping plate, and the bearing seat is movably connected with the end part of the handle through a pin shaft.
According to the present disclosure, there is provided a sanding device comprising: a sanding head; and a handle; wherein the sanding head comprises front face with an associated sandpaper securement mechanism; and the handle is mounted by a knuckle to the sanding head; the knuckle arranged such that the handle and sanding head mutually displace about at least one axis.
In some embodiments of the device, the knuckle comprises a pivot, so as to allow for pivoting around a first axis, for example, defined by the longitudinal axis of the handle.
In some embodiments of the device, the knuckle comprises a ball-joint or bearing, which may allow for turning around a second axis, for example, defined by the plane of the sanding head.
In some embodiments of the device, the knuckle connects to the head at a rotating plate therefore, meaning that particularly with embodiments comprising a pivot as well, the user is enabled to direct the sanding from most locations.
In some embodiments of the device, the knuckle comprises a locking means to lock mutual displacement, for example, of the pivot or ball-joint.
In some embodiments of the device, the handle is arranged to displace from a first longer configuration to a second shorter configuration, for example, being foldable or coaxially telescopic.
In some embodiments of the device, the sanding head comprises hook and loop securement mechanism for sandpaper, for example, where the user applies hook or loop material to the sandpaper in use, or where it is purchased as such.
In some embodiments of the device, the device comprises a spring bias securement mechanism for sandpaper, which may be envisaged to grip onto or over the sandpaper.
In some embodiments of the device, the device comprises a reversible attachment means of the sanding head to the handle, so as to allow for improvements, updates or replacements of the head.
In some embodiments of the device, the handle has a socket for connection of a decorating extension pole, so as to allow for longer handles.
In some embodiments of the device, the device comprises a light source to aid in viewing sanding areas and surroundings, for example, being located at the end, for example, having a push switch.
According to a further aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a sanding device substantially as described herein, arranged to accept cartridge units of sandpaper.
According to a further aspect of the present disclosure, there is therefore provided a cartridge unit of sandpaper for such a device.
With reference to the figures, inthere is shown an embodiment of a sanding devicegenerally comprising a sanding headand a handle, wherein the sanding head comprises a sandpaper securement mechanism, and the handleis displaceably mounted on a mountto the sanding head, the mount arranged such that the handle and sanding head mutually displace about at least one axis.
In particular reference to the pictured embodiment in,,,and, the embodiment comprises an elongated handlecomprised as a single cylindrical length made up of a plurality of coaxially telescopic parts,, with a handgripat a proximal end, and the headat the distal end.
The handle may be powder-coated aluminum or plastic or a stainless steel part with an intermediate collarto lock extension or retraction. The collar is acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) or similar plastic. The collar is provided with gripping ribs.
The parts are arranged to telescope coaxially.
The distal end comprises a knuckle, which knuckle connects to the sanding head at a rotating plate, which comprises a hinge, thereby allowing movement in a plurality of planes and axes.
The knuckle is hinged at a locking pivotto the rotating plate, which plate is set into the rear faceof a planar rectangular sandpaper holder, which comprises a flat front facefor receipt of the sandpaper, and two end gripsarranged to grip the sandpaper and pull it against the flat front face of the holder.
The end grips comprise resilient members, in the pictured embodiment being stainless steel flat plates with a blade edgerunning coplanar to the front faceof the, held on the holderby stainless steel springs, hinged against the holder, so as to spring back toward the knuckleand stretch and pull a sheet of sandpaperagainst the front facewith its ends trapped by the blade edgeagainst the holder side faces.
The stainless steel springsare torsion springs joined at a pivot pinon the ends of the rear face of the holder.
The knuckleis a rigid plastic molding such as in ABS or similar plastic, with stainless steel screw fittings.
The knucklecomprises two parts, that have mutually interlocking teeth, where when the teeth are not interlocked the parts may counterrotate that one partconnected with the handle and the other partconnected with the holder.
The knucklefurther internally comprises angle adjustment thread, angle adjustment nut, O-ring, and further comprises an axially endmost tightening handle.
The knuckleattaches at a bearingto the holder, the bearingturning in a rotating plate, around which the knuckleand handlerotate, so as to allow greater flexibility in maneuvering the head in use.
In further embodiments, the rotating may be capable of being locked, or tightened, with such as a rotation locking thumb screw mechanism.
