This application claims the benefit of U.S. provisional application No. 63/555,287, filed Apr. 10, 2024, which is here by incorporated by reference as though fully set forth herein.
The window well insulation system is directed towards an inflatable insulating bag disposed in a window well to isolate a window in the window will from the outside weather.
A window well is a recessed area dug out around a basement window typically below ground level, that allows for a larger windows to be installed, and provides a path for natural light to the basement. The window well comprises a shell dug into the earth around the foundation of a house to create a space between the window and the surrounding earth to provide egress from the basement and hold the surrounding dirt from collapsing by the window and let light in the window.
A window well may have a cover placed on top of the window well. The window well cover prevents debris from falling into the window well but does not seal the window well to prevent cold or hot outside air to enter the basement.
While there are many different window well cover designs preventing debris from entering into the window well cavity, there remains a need for a window well system that insulates the window in the window well when temperatures plummet to below freezing.
The present invention provides a window well insulation system comprising an inflatable bag, adapted to attach to the house by a mounting bracket, disposed in the window well shell having a cover top attached along it's distal edge to the mounting bracket, and a valve to introduce or evacuate an insulation material into or out of the inflatable bag, and a weather seal.
In the following detailed description of the preferred embodiments, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application. The drawings show, by way of illustration, specific embodiments in which the invention may be practiced. It is to be understood that other embodiments may be utilized and structural changes may be made without departing from the scope of the present invention. (It is to be understood that the specific devices and processes illustrated in the attached drawings, and described in the following specification are simply exemplary embodiments of the inventive concepts defined in the appended claims. Hence, specific dimensions and other physical characteristics relating to the embodiments disclosed herein are not to be considered as limiting.) It should be appreciated that the invention can be used for any suitable device attachable to a magnetic surface,
Referring now to the drawings with reference to, the window well insulation systemmay comprise a system top, and an inflatable insulating bagdisposed in a window well. The window wellcomprises a shellhaving a upper lipat or above ground leveland a bottom, generally below the window. The shellmay be formed of metal or plastic disposed adjacent to a windowin an exterior wallof a house. The window well shellsurrounds a cavityin the earth having a bottom, generally below the window, and adjacent to the windowto provide egress through the window and exposure to fresh air and sunlight. The window well insulation systemmay further comprise a tophaving a perimeter regiondisposed on the top of the shell. The system topmay comprise a sheet of plastic, wood or metal. The system topmay include a mounting bracketadapted to attach the system topto the exterior wallof a house. The system topmay be formed from a rigid translucent plastic material selected from silicone, poly carbonate, acrylic, and plexiglass.
The inflatable bagmay comprise a valveand a bottom. The bottommay be disposed on the window well bottom. The window well insulation systemmay be tilted up and out of the window wellfor access to valve. The valvemay be a closeable valve to keep the inflatable bagsealed.
In another embodiment shown in, mounting bracketmay be removably affixed to the exterior wallof a house such that the window well insulation systemcan be lifted up and out of the window wellfor access to valve. The valvemay be adapted to introduce or evacuate a variety of insulating materials to or from inside the inflatable insulation bag. The inflatable insulation bagmay be made of a flexible material that when inflated or filled conforms to the shape of the window well cavitybearing against the shelland the window. In one embodiment the inflatable, insulation bagmay be made of a flexible material selected from the group consisting of silicone, polyvinyl chloride, thermoplastic polyurethane, nylon and polyethylene.
Referring to, the bottomof the inflatable insulation bagmay be formed of a rigid or flexible material to protect the bag. The bottomof the inflatable insulation bagmay be made of wood, metal or plastic material.
In the preferred embodiment the inflatable insulation bagmay be filled with air as the insulation material. The window well insulation systemsits within the window well cavityand when inflated, the inflatable insulation bagis adapted to conform to the shape of the window well cavity. The inflatable insulation bag may be made of a translucent material so as to allow light to pass through the cover, the bagand through the window.
shows the window well cover opmay be sloped and extend beyond the window well upper lipwhich is raised above the ground level.
shows the valvemay be adjacent to the cover topfor ease of access to the valve.
A weather sealis shown inwhich is formed of a rubber, foam or other flexible material which can be removably affixed to the window well upper lip. The weather sealmay comprise a window well upper lip channeladapted to engage the window well shellalong the upper lip. The inflatable insulation bagmay be affixed to an inner wallof the weather sealvia adhesive. The window well cover top, may be attached to the weather sealto minimize or eliminate cold air drafts from entering the window wellhaving the weather sealbetween the top coverand the shell. The window well insulation systemmay be removed for repair or storage.
Although the description above contains many specifications, these should not be construed as limiting the scope of the invention but as merely providing illustrations of some of the embodiments of this invention.
