This disclosure relates generally to systems, methods, and apparatuses for a secondary safety lid for a riser system, and more particularly, to a secondary safety lid that does not need to be removed from the riser system to access the riser system.

Septic tanks and other water storage tanks may be buried beneath the surface of soil. Such tanks may include openings at a top portion of the tank to allow access to the interior of the tank for maintenance, cleaning, or inspection. When a tank is buried below grade, a tubular riser may extend from the tank opening to the soil surface to allow access to the tank. A primary lid may be installed at the top of the riser to prevent access to the riser and the tank. A secondary lid may also be installed within the riser below the primary lid to provide secondary protection if the primary lid is accidentally removed or becomes damaged. Some existing secondary lids may be fixed in place within the riser using screws or other fasteners. Such secondary lids may require a contractor to remove the screws and the secondary lid to access the riser and the tank for cleaning, maintenance, or inspection. Other existing secondary lids may be very heavy (typically made of concrete) to prevent children or animals from removing the secondary lid and accessing the riser and the tank. Such secondary lids also require a contractor to remove the secondary lid to access the tank. Such secondary lids may also be difficult to remove because of the weight of the secondary lid.

Therefore, solutions are needed to provide a secondary lid that does not need to be removed from within a riser to allow a contractor to access the riser and a tank. Such secondary lids should provide a secure cover over the opening of a riser that cannot be accidentally removed by children or other unauthorized users. Further, such secondary lids should be permanently installed within the riser and should not need to be removed to allow access to the riser and the tank. Such secondary lids should also be able to be opened and securely closed without the use of tools. Such secondary lids should also include an expandable ring or a mounting plug which may allow the secondary lid system to be installed within a variety of riser systems of varying diameters.
