1

1. A method for operating a portable computer system, comprising the steps of: starting a computer system; placing said computer system in a low-power state, wherein the s audio subsystem remains powered; operating said audio subsystem while said computer system is in said low-power state.

2

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of determining when said audio is no longer being operated, and then placing said audio subsystem into a low-power state.

3

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of when a predetermined time has expired, placing said audio subsystem into a low-power state.

4

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of manually stopping said audio subsystem, and then placing said audio subsystem into a low-power state.

5

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said audio subsystem reads optical media.

6

6. A method for operating a portable computer system, comprising the steps of: starting a computer system; starting an audio play application; placing said computer system in a low-power state; and playing audio while said system is in said low-power state.

7

7. The method of claim 6, wherein said audio is played from an optical media.

8

8. The method of claim 6, wherein said audio play application controls said audio playing while said system is active and in said suspend mode.

9

9. A portable computer system comprising: a microprocessor; a memory connected to said microprocessor; a display device connected to display data generated by said microprocessor; an multimedia controller connected to said microprocessor; an input device connected to said multimedia controller for reading multimedia data; a battery connected to power said microprocessor, memory, display device, audio controller, and audio input device; wherein said system may be placed in a suspend mode in which said microprocessor and display are placed reduced power state; and wherein said multimedia input device and said multimedia controller can selectably operate to read and output said multimedia data when said system is in said suspend mode.

10

10. The system of claim 9, further comprising circuitry to isolate an input to said audio input device from a system bus when said system is in a suspend mode.

11

11. The system of claim 9, further comprising circuitry to indicate if said audio input device is providing audio input.

12

12. The system of claim 9, further comprising circuitry to control said audio input device when said system is in a suspend mode.

13

13. The system of claim 9, wherein said audio input device is a CD-ROM drive.

14

14. The system of claim 9, wherein said audio input device is a DVD drive.

15

15. The system of claim 9, wherein said audio input device may also be used as a data input device.

16

16. The system of claim 9, wherein said audio controller comprises an ESS1688 device.
