In a method for obtaining a selegiline therapeutic effect in a patient undergoing drug withdrawal, the improvement which comprises administering to the patient R( ) desmethylselegiline and S( ) desmethylselegiline, employing a dosage regimen effective to treat one or more withdrawal symptoms associated with one or more drugs selected from the group consisting of addictive psychostimulants, opiates, narcotics, barbiturates, alcohol, and nicotine.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more withdrawal symptoms are associated with an addictive psychostimulant.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more withdrawal symptoms are associated with an addictive opiate.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more withdrawal symptoms are associated with an addictive narcotic.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more withdrawal symptoms are associated with an addictive barbiturate.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more withdrawal symptoms are associated with alcohol.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more withdrawal symptoms are associated with nicotine.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said one or more withdrawal symptoms are selected from the group consisting of: drug craving; depression, irritability; anergia; amotivation; appetite changes; nausea; shaking; psychomotoric retardation; and irregular sleep patterns.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the R( ) desmethylselegiline and the S( ) desmethylselegiline are administered orally.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the R( ) desmethylselegiline and the S( ) desmethylselegiline are administered non-orally.
11. A pharmaceutical composition, comprising: a) R( ) desmethylselegiline; b) S( ) desmethylselegiline; and c) a third drug useful in the treatment of the symptoms associated with drug withdrawal; wherein the R( ) desmethylselegiline, the S( ) desmethylselegiline, and the third drug are present in an amount such that one or more unit doses of the composition are effective to treat one or more withdrawal symptoms associated with one or more drugs selected from the group consisting of addictive psychostimulants, opiates, narcotics, barbiturates, alcohol, and nicotine.
12. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the third drug is selected from the group consisting of naloxone, naltrexone, and nalorphine.
13. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the one or more withdrawal symptoms are selected from the group consisting of: drug craving; depression, irritability; anergia; amotivation; appetite changes; nausea; shaking; psychomotoric retardation; and irregular sleep patterns.
14. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the one or more withdrawal symptoms are associated with an addictive psychostimulant.
15. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the one or more withdrawal symptoms are associated with an addictive opiate.
16. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the one or more withdrawal symptoms are associated with an addictive narcotic.
17. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the one or more withdrawal symptoms are associated with an addictive barbiturate.
18. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the one or more withdrawal symptoms are associated with alcohol.
19. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the one or more withdrawal symptoms are associated with nicotine.
20. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the R( ) desmethylselegiline and the S( ) desmethylselegiline are administered orally.
