A recording medium and apparatus and method for managing defective areas are discussed. According to an embodiment a controller determining whether or not to replace a defective block with a replacement block when a writing or reading data to or from the optical recording medium, based upon a data type to be written or read, and creating a defect list, the defect list including information to indicate whether or not the defective block is replaced with a replacement block; and a writing reading unit, coupled to the controller, to write or read the data to or from the optical recording medium and storing the defect list to a defect management area of the optical recording medium, according to a control of the controller.

1. An apparatus for managing defective blocks of an optical recording medium, the apparatus comprising: a controller configured to determine whether or not to replace a defective block with a replacement block when a current writing or reading operation of data to or from the optical recording medium is performed, based upon a type of data to be written or read, and create a defect list including indication information to indicate whether or not the defective block is replaced with the replacement block when the current writing or reading operation is performed; and a writing/reading unit, operably coupled to the controller, and configured to write or read the data to or from the optical recording medium and store the defect list to a defect management area of the optical recording medium, according to a control of the controller.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to control the writing/reading unit so that the defective block is not replaced with the replacement block when the type of data indicates a real time writing or reading operation, and control the writing/reading unit so that the defective block is replaced with the replacement block when the type of data indicates a non real time writing or reading operation.

The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the controller is further configured to create the indication information to indicate that the defective block is not replaced with the replacement block when the type of data indicates the real time writing or reading operation, and create the indication information to indicate that the defective block is replaced with the replacement block when the type of data indicates the non real time writing or reading operation.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to create the defect list to further include first position information for specifying the defective block and second position information for specifying the replacement block, and wherein, when the type of data indicates a real time writing or reading operation, the defect list includes the indication information to indicate that the defective block is not replaced with the replacement block, the first position information for specifying the defective block and the second position information for specifying the replacement block, in which the second position information is without a designated value.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to create the defect list to further include first position information for specifying the defective block and second position information for specifying the replacement block, and wherein, when the type of data indicates a non real time writing or reading operation, the defect list includes the indication information to indicate that the defective block is replaced with the replacement block, the first position information for specifying the defective block and the second position information for specifying an available replacement.

The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine if there is an available spare block within a spare area of the optical recording medium, when the type of data indicates the non real time writing or reading operation, and the replacement block to the defective block if there is the available spare block, control the writing/reading unit to write data to the replacement block assigned to the defective block, and create the detect list including the indication information to indicate that the defective block is replaced with the replacement block, the first position information for specifying the defective block and the second position information for specifying the replacement block assigned to the defective block.

An apparatus for recording data, the apparatus comprising: a storage unit configured to store a defect list, including first position information for specifying a defective block, second position information for specifying a replacement block for the defective block, the second position information having a valid or not valid value, and indication information for indicating whether or not the defective block is replaced with the replacement block when a current writing or reading of data is performed, the indication information being set based upon a type of data written or read; a controller configured to determine whether to write or read data to or from the replacement block assigned to the defective block based on the defect list stored in the storage unit; and an optical pickup configured to write or read data to or from an optical recording medium according to a control of the controller.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the controller is further configured to read data from the replacement block assigned to the defective block if the indication information indicates that the defective block is replaced with the replacement block.

The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the controller is configured to assign a new replacement block for the defective block if the indication information indicates that the defective block is not replaced with the replacement block and the second position information does not have the valid value, and control the optical pickup to write data to the new replacement block.

An apparatus for managing a defective area in a recording medium, the apparatus comprising: a controller configured to discriminate whether or not data to be written or read is real time data, control a recording or reproducing operation such that a defective area is not replaced with a spare area if the data is the real time data, while the defective area is replaced with the spare area if the data is not the real time data and if a spare block to replace the defective area exists in the spare area based on status information to indicate whether or not the spare area is full, and create a defect list in response to the recording or reproducing operation, the defect list including indication information to indicate whether or not the defective area is replaced for the recording or reproducing operation, the indication information being set depending upon the recording or reproducing operation regarding the defective area; and a writing/reading unit, coupled to the controller, and configured to write or read the data according to a control of the controller.

The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the controller is further configured to create the defect list including first position information for specifying the defective area and second position information for specifying the spare block, and control the writing/reading unit to write the defect list at a specific area of the recording medium.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the controller is further configured to set the indication information to a value to indicate that the defective area is not replaced with the spare area if the data is the real time data.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the controller is further configured to set the indication information to a value to indicate that the defective area is replaced with the spare area if the data is not the real time data.

An apparatus for managing a defective block, the apparatus comprising: a writing/reading unit configured to perform a writing or reading operation of data to or from a recording medium; and a controller, operatively coupled to the writing/reading unit, and configured to control the writing or reading operation of the data, control the writing/reading unit to skip a defective block and to write the data in a normal block following the defective block when a real time recording operation is performed, replace a defective block with a spare block when a non real time recording operation is performed, and create a defect list for the defective block, the defect list including first position information for specifying the defective block, second position information for not specifying the spare block, the second position information being without a valid value, and indication information for indicating that the defective block is not replaced with the spare block, when the real time recording operation is performed, and the defect list including the first position information for specifying the defective block, the second position information for specifying the spare block, and the indication information for indicating that the defective block is replaced with the spare block, when the non real time recording operation is performed, wherein the writing/reading unit is further configured to write the defect list to a defect management area of the recording medium, according to a control of the controller.

An apparatus for recording or reading data to or from a recording medium the apparatus comprising: a pickup configured to write or read data to or from the recording medium; and a controller configured to control a recording or reading operation such that a defective block is replaced with a spare block of a spare area of the recording medium or the defective block is not replaced with the spare block of the spare area, based upon whether or not data to be written or read is real time data or non real time data and whether or not there is an available spare block to substitute for the defective block, control the pickup to write or read data to or from an available spare block if the data is the non real time data and if there is the available spare block, and control the pickup not to replace the defective block with the spare block or control the pickup not to move to the spare area regarding the defective block if the data is the real time data.

The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the controller is further configured to create a defect list including indication information to indicate whether the defective block is replaced with the spare block, control the pickup to write the defect list to a specific area of the recording medium, set the indication information to a first value for indicating that the defective block is replaced with the available spare block if the data is the non real time data and set the indication information to a second value for indicating that the defective block is not replaced with the spare block if the data is the real time data.

The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the defect list further includes first position information for specifying the defective block and second position information for specifying the spare block, and wherein the controller is further configured to create the defect list including the indication information with the first value, the first position information for specifying the defective block and the second position information for specifying the available spare block if the data is the non real time data, and create the defect list including the indication information with the second value, the first position information for specifying the defective block and the second position information for not specifying an available spare block if the data is the real time data.

An apparatus for managing a defective area of a recording medium, the apparatus comprising: an optical pickup configured to write/read data on/from the recording medium; and a controller, operably connected with the optical pickup, and configured to check whether or not data to be written or read is real time data and whether or not an available spare block of a spare area remains, and determine whether or not to replace a defective block with a spare block within the spare area of the recording medium, based upon a result of the checking result, wherein the controller is further configured to replace the defective block with the spare block within the spare area if the controller determines the data is not the real time data and there is the available spare block.

The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the controller is further configured to control the optical pickup to record a defect list at a specific area of the recording medium, the defect list including indication information for indicating whether or not the defective block is replaced with the spare block, based upon a result of said determination.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the indication information is set to a first value to indicate that the defective block is not replaced, if the data is the real time data.

21. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine not to replace the defective block with the spare block, if there is available spare block within the spare area.

22. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine to replace the defective block with the spare block, if the data is the non-real time data.

23. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the controller is further configured to check whether there is the available spare block within the spare area for the defective block prior to the determination of the replacement, if the data is the non-real time data.

The apparatus of claim 23 , wherein the controller is further configured to replace the defective block with the spare block if the data is the non-real time data and there is the spare block within the spare area for the defective block, and wherein the indication information is set to the first value to indicate that the defective block is replaced with the spare block.
