Disclosed herein are methods and apparatus for operating and deploying a broadband wireless network having at least one data transmission node and a plurality of CPE units, wherein there is a wireless data link at least in part between the data transmission node and the CPE units, and further wherein the management and configuration of the network is managed centrally and at least one of authorization, authentication, data stream prioritization or queuing is accomplished through the operation of the CPE units. According to one embodiment there is provided a user group manager that provides a user interface for at least one local service provider to manage information about end users served by the local service provider. In another embodiment, management and configuration of the network is managed using a device that communicates with CPE units and the data transmission nodes. The system and method further provides a data transmission node that includes routing capability, wherein the data transmission node is located with at least one CPE unit. In another embodiment, a network supervision and management device holds an original configuration file for each CPE unit wherein each CPE unit further includes a configuration file that includes an address reference to one or more of the supervision and management devices thereby providing for connectivity to the supervision and management devices and capability of redundancy when more than one supervision and management device is referenced.

1. A method comprising: establishing a network operating center that is operated by a first party; deploying a first broadband wireless network including at least one data transmission node for connecting a plurality of customer premises equipment (CPE) units to an access point for the Internet; using a wireless data link at least in part to transmit data between the data transmission node and the CPE units; connecting the CPE units to the access point for the Internet and transmitting data between the CPE units and the Internet; provisioning the CPE units with at least one network provisioning system; wherein data transmission between the CPE units and the access point for the Internet has at least the attributes of bandwidth and quality of service, wherein the bandwidth and quality of service is at least in part controlled by the prioritization or queuing of the data transmissions passing though the CPE units, the CPE units at least in part controlling network traffic to and from the CPE units; using a gateway unit included in the data transmission node to establish an authorized data path between individual ones of the CPE units and the access point at least in part in response to instructions received from the network provisioning system; performing authorization, authentication, and data stream prioritization as a function of the CPE units, wherein the CPE units can be individually authorized and authenticated by the network provisioning system, and further wherein the CPE units are provisioned by the network provisioning system with one or more parameters controlling at least one attribute of data stream prioritization performed as the function of the CPE units; wherein the gateway unit included in the data transmission node and used to establish the authorized data path between the CPE units and the access point is not required to perform data stream queuing to control the flow of data between the CPE units and the Internet; wherein management and configuration of the network is managed centrally from the network provisioning system and authorization; wherein the data transmission node is capable of supporting a first capacity of broadband wireless services; wherein the data transmission node is initially provided to a first broadband wireless carrier so as to be limited to supporting a second capacity of broadband wireless services that is less than the first capacity, and can be configured to support more than the second capacity of broadband wireless services, wherein the first broadband wireless carrier can remotely manage and control the network using the network provisioning system; at least in part supporting the deployed network using the network operating center operated by the first party; and wherein billing information is supplied from a system supplier to the broadband wireless carrier and further from the broadband wireless carrier to at least one local service provider and further from at least one local service provider to an end user subscriber; and initially deploying the broadband wireless network with at least one gateway unit and at least one network provisioning system, and adding CPE units to the network substantially incrementally so that at least a part of the capability to control the network data traffic is added to the broadband wireless network substantially incrementally as opposed to being a capability required by the gateway unit when the network is initially deployed.
2. A method comprising: establishing a network operating center that is operated by a first party; deploying a first broadband wireless network including at least one data transmission node for connecting a plurality of customer premises equipment (CPE) units to an access point for the Internet; using a wireless data link at least in part to transmit data between the data transmission node and the CPE units; connecting the CPE units to the access point for the Internet and transmitting data between the CPE units and the Internet; provisioning the CPE units with at least one network provisioning system; wherein data transmission between the CPE units and the access point for the Internet has at least the attributes of bandwidth and quality of service, wherein the bandwidth and quality of service is at least in part controlled by the prioritization or queuing of the data transmissions passing through the CPE units, the CPE units at least in part controlling network traffic to and from the CPE units; using a gateway unit included in the data transmission node to establish an authorized data path between individual ones of the CPE units and the access point at least in part in response to instructions received from the network provisioning system; performing authorization, authentication, and data stream prioritization as a function of the CPE units, wherein the CPE units can be individually authorized and authenticated by the network provisioning system, and further wherein the CPE units are provisioned by the network provisioning system with one or more parameters controlling at least one attribute of data stream prioritization performed as the function of the CPE units; wherein the gateway unit included in the data transmission node and used to establish the authorized data path between the CPE units and the access point is not required to perform data stream queuing to control the flow of data between the CPE units and the Internet; wherein management and configuration of the network is managed centrally from the network provisioning system and authorization; wherein the data transmission node is capable of supporting a first capacity of broadband wireless services; wherein the data transmission node is initially provided to a first broadband wireless carrier so as to be limited to supporting a second capacity of broadband wireless services that is less than the first capacity, and can be configured to support more than the second capacity of broadband wireless services, wherein the first broadband wireless carrier can remotely manage and control the network using the network provisioning system; at least in part supporting the deployed network using the network operating center operated by the first party; and wherein billing information is supplied from a system supplier to the broadband wireless carrier and further from the broadband wireless carrier to at least one local service provider and further from at least one local service provider to an end user subscriber; and initially deploying the broadband wireless network with at least one gateway unit and at least one network provisioning system, and adding CPE units to the network substantially incrementally so that at least a part of the capability to control the network data traffic is added to the broadband wireless network substantially incrementally as opposed to being a capability required by the gateway unit when the network is initially deployed; maintaining a plurality of selectable service subscriptions for the end user subscriber with a CPE unit, wherein the subscriber selects one or more of the selectable service subscriptions to apply during a billing period; and uploading the one or more of the selectable service subscriptions from the CPE unit to the network operating center.
3. A method comprising: establishing a network operating center that is operated by a first party; deploying a first broadband wireless network including at least one data transmission node for connecting a plurality of customer premises equipment (CPE) units to an access point for the Internet; using a wireless data link at least in part to transmit data between the data transmission node and the CPE units; connecting the CPE units to the access point for the Internet and transmitting data between the CPE units and the Internet; provisioning the CPE units with at least one network provisioning system; wherein data transmission between the CPE units and the access point for the Internet has at least the attributes of bandwidth and quality of service, wherein the bandwidth and quality of service is at least in part controlled by the prioritization or queuing of the data transmissions passing through the CPE units, the CPE units at least in part controlling network traffic to and from the CPE units; using a gateway unit included in the data transmission node to establish an authorized data path between individual ones of the CPE units and the access point at least in part in response to instructions received from the network provisioning system; performing authorization, authentication, and data stream prioritization as a function of the CPE units, wherein the CPE units can be individually authorized and authenticated by the network provisioning system, and further wherein the CPE units are provisioned by the network provisioning system with one or more parameters controlling at least one attribute of data stream prioritization performed as the function of the CPE units; wherein the gateway unit included in the data transmission node and used to establish the authorized data path between the CPE units and the access point is not required to perform data stream queuing to control the flow of data between the CPE units and the Internet; wherein management and configuration of the network is managed centrally from the network provisioning system and authorization; wherein the data transmission node is capable of supporting a first capacity of broadband wireless services; wherein the data transmission node is initially provided to a first broadband wireless carrier so as to be limited to supporting a second capacity of broadband wireless services that is less than the first capacity, and can be configured to support more than the second capacity of broadband wireless services, wherein the first broadband wireless carrier can remotely manage and control the network using the network provisioning system; at least in part supporting the deployed network using the network operating center operated by the first party; and wherein billing information is supplied from a system supplier to the broadband wireless carrier and further from the broadband wireless carrier to at least one local service provider and further from at least one local service provider to an end user subscriber; and initially deploying the broadband wireless network with at least one gateway unit and at least one network provisioning system, and adding CPE units to the network substantially incrementally so that at least a part of the capability to control the network data traffic is added to the broadband wireless network substantially incrementally as opposed to being a capability required by the gateway unit when the network is initially deployed; maintaining a plurality of selectable service subscriptions for the end user subscriber with a CPE unit, wherein the subscriber selects one or more of the selectable service subscriptions to apply during a billing period; uploading the one or more of the selectable service subscriptions from the CPE unit to the network operating center; and wherein the CPE unit is adapted to allow the subscriber to select different ones of the plurality of selectable service subscriptions during the billing period.
