An input arrangement for controlling an electronic device. The arrangement comprises a substrate have a position-coding pattern printed thereon. The position-coding pattern codes first and second sets of absolute positions on spatially separate areas of the substrate. The first and second sets of absolute positions are mutually exclusive and coded by first and second subsets of the position-coding pattern. A handheld image-recording device comprises an image sensor for recording images of the position-coding pattern a processor is configured for deriving an absolute position from the position-coding pattern in the recorded image and providing an instruction to the electronic device to perform a first function when the absolute position belongs to the first set and a second function when the absolute position belongs to the second set.
Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.
1. An input arrangement for controlling an electronic device, comprising: a substrate having a position-coding pattern printed thereon, said position-coding pattern coding first and second sets of absolute positions on spatially separate areas of said substrate, said first and second sets of absolute positions being mutually exclusive and coded by first and second subsets of said position-coding pattern; a handheld image-recording device comprising an image sensor for recording images of said position-coding pattern; and processing means configured for deriving at least one absolute position from the position-coding pattern in the recorded image, and for providing an instruction to the electronic device to perform a first function when said at least one absolute position belongs to the first set and a second function when said at least one absolute position belongs to the second set.
2. The input arrangement of claim 1 , wherein at least part of said processing means is housed in said handheld image-recording device.
3. The input arrangement of claim 1 , wherein said first function is visually indicated on said substrate.
4. The input arrangement of claim 3 , wherein said first function is visually indicated by a button on said substrate.
5. The input arrangement of claim 1 , wherein said first function generates a command function for controlling the electronic device.
6. The input arrangement of claim 1 , wherein said first function changes a characteristic of said electronic device.
7. The input arrangement of claim 1 , wherein said characteristic is identifiable by a user.
8. The input arrangement of claim 1 , wherein said second function is an input function.
9. The input unit arrangement of claim 8 , wherein said input function is a recording handwriting function.
10. The input arrangement of claim 9 , wherein said processing means records a handwriting stroke as a sequence of absolute positions derived from said images.
