An interactive application for execution on a handheld display device having an image sensor, a transceiver and a touch-sensitive screen. The interactive application is configured to operatively control the device so as to perform the steps of: determining interaction data using image data captured by the image sensor, the image data being captured by imaging a printed substrate containing printed content; sending the interaction data to a computer system, thereby causing the computer system to retrieve display data corresponding to the printed content; receiving the display data from the computer system; and displaying content based on the received display data. The touch-sensitive screen enables interaction with the displayed content.
Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.
1. An interactive application for execution on a handheld display device having an image sensor, a transceiver and an opaque touch-sensitive screen, the interactive application being configured to operatively control the device so as to perform the steps of: determining interaction data using image data captured by the image sensor, said image data being captured by imaging a printed substrate containing printed content; sending the interaction data to a computer system, thereby causing the computer system to identify a page description corresponding to the printed substrate and retrieve display data corresponding to at least some of the printed content using the identified page description; receiving the display data from the computer system; and displaying, on said opaque touch-sensitive screen, display content based on said received display data, wherein the opaque touch-sensitive screen enables interaction with the display content, wherein, from a user's perspective, the opaque touch-sensitive screen has real-time virtual transparency through the screen to the printed content underlying said screen to provide a virtual window to the printed content underlying said screen.
2. The interactive application of claim 1 , wherein the display content comprises a displayed hyperlink corresponding to a printed hyperlink on the printed substrate, the displayed hyperlink being interactive via the touch-sensitive display screen of the device.
3. The interactive application of claim 2 , which is further configured to perform the step of: retrieving hyperlinked content in response to interaction with the displayed hyperlink via the touch-sensitive screen.
4. The interactive application of claim 1 , wherein the handheld device comprises a memory and wherein the interactive application is further configured to perform the step of: storing the received display data in said memory.
5. The interactive application of claim 1 , wherein the display content is identical to printed content imaged by the image sensor.
6. The interactive application of claim 1 , wherein the interactive application is for execution on a mobile phone or a personal digital assistant.
7. A computer readable medium containing processing instructions for a handheld display device having an image sensor, a transceiver and an opaque touch-sensitive screen, the processing instructions operatively controlling the device so as to perform the steps of: determining interaction data using image data captured by the image sensor, said image data being captured by imaging a printed substrate containing printed content; sending the interaction data to a computer system, thereby causing the computer system to identify a page description corresponding to the printed substrate and retrieve display data corresponding to at least some of the printed content using the identified page description; receiving the display data from the computer system; and displaying, on said opaque touch-sensitive screen, display content based on said received display data, wherein the opaque touch-sensitive screen enables interaction with the display content, wherein, from a user's perspective, the opaque touch-sensitive screen has real-time virtual transparency through the screen to the printed content underlying said screen to provide a virtual window to the printed content underlying said screen.
