Technical Abstract

A base station transmits control information to a mobile station. A first control channel is transmitted to the mobile station. The first control channel contains an indication of the number of control channel occurrences in a frame. A second control channel is transmitted to the mobile station in a control subframe. The second control channel contains information for communicating a packet between the base station and the mobile station. The control subframe is determined from the number of control channel occurrences in the frame. The packet can then be communicated between the base station and the mobile station in a subframe based on the control channels transmitted.

1

1. A method in a base station of transmitting control information to a mobile station, the method comprising: transmitting a first control channel to the mobile station, the first control channel containing an indication of the number of control channel occurrences in a frame; transmitting a second control channel to the mobile station in a control subframe, the second control channel containing information for communicating a packet between the base station and the mobile station, the control subframe determined from the number of control channel occurrences in the frame; and communicating the packet between the base station and the mobile station in a subframe based on the transmitted second control channel information.

2

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein communicating the packet comprises transmitting the packet to the mobile station.

3

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein communicating the packet comprises receiving the packet from the mobile station.

4

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first control channel is a broadcast control channel.

5

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication of the number of control channel occurrences includes an explicit indication of the number of control channel occurrences.

6

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first control channel further contains an indication of the total number of downlink subframes in the frame.

7

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the control subframes are determined based on the indication of the total number of downlink subframes in the frame and the indication of the total number of control channel occurrences in the frame.

8

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication of the number of control channel occurrences comprises a bitmap that includes a plurality of bits, each bit corresponding to a subframe.

9

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second control channel has a size that is determined based on the indication of the number of control channel occurrences.

10

10. A method in a mobile station of receiving control information from a base station, the method comprising: receiving a first control channel from the base station, the first control channel containing an indication of the number of control channel occurrences in the frame; receiving a second control channel from the base station in a control subframe, the second control channel containing information for communicating a packet between the base station and the mobile station, the control subframe determined from the number of control channel occurrences in the frame; and communicating the packet between the mobile station and the base station in a subframe based on the received second control channel information.

11

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein communicating the packet comprises transmitting the packet to the base station.

12

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein communicating the packet comprises receiving the packet from the base station.

13

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first control channel is a broadcast control channel.

14

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the indication of the number of control channel occurrences includes an explicit indication of the number of control channel occurrences.

15

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first control channel further contains an indication of the total number of downlink subframes in the frame.

16

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the control subframes are determined based on the indication of the total number of downlink subframes in the frame and the indication of the total number of control channel occurrences in the frame.

17

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the indication of the number of control channel occurrences comprises a bitmap that includes a plurality of bits, each bit corresponding to a subframe.

18

18. The method of claim 10 , wherein the second control channel has a size that is determined based on the indication of the number of control channel occurrences.

19

19. A base station for use in a wireless communication system, the base station comprising: a control unit that determines an indication of a number of control channel occurrences in a frame; and a transmission unit that transmits, to a mobile station, a first control channel that includes the number of control channel occurrences in the frame, and transmits a second control channel in a control subframe, the second control channel including information for communicating a packet between the base station and the mobile station, the control subframe determined from the number of control channel occurrences in the frame; wherein the base station communicates with the mobile station by sending or receiving the packet in a subframe based on the second control channel information.
