A method and apparatus for transmitting an AccessParameters group message in a wireless communication system, the method comprising generating the AccessParameters group message comprising a 2 bit AccessCycle Duration field wherein the AccessCycle Duration field determines the duration of the access cycle in units of Control Segment Periods (as defined by the Physical Layer), a 5 bit AccessSequencePartition field wherein the AccessSequencePartition field indicates the partition of the access sequence space to allow the access terminal to signal pilot power and buffer status information with the access sequence, a 4 bit MaxProbesPerSequence field wherein the MaxProbesPerSequence field determines the maximum number of probe sequence that can be part of one access sequence and is set to n+1, a 4 bit ProbeRampUpStepSize field wherein the ProbeRampUpStepSize field determines the power ramp up used for probes within a probe sequence and is set to a value 0.5*(1+n)dB, a 6 bit RDCHInitialPacketFormat field wherein the RDCHInitialPacketFormat field is set to the packet format that is used on the first transmission the access terminal makes on the R-DCH after getting an access grant, a 2 bit PilotStrengthSegmentation field wherein the PilotStrengthSegmentation field comprises a PilotThreshold1 and PilotThreshold2, a 8 bit OpenLoopAdjust field wherein the OpenLoopAdjust field determines the nominal power used by access terminal in the open loop power estimate and is set to value 70+n dB and transmitting the AccessParameters group message over a communication link.

A method of transmitting an AccessParameters group message in a wireless communication system, the method comprising: employing a processor executing computer executable instructions embodied on at least one non-transitory computer readable medium to perform operations comprising: generating the AccessParameters group message, the message comprising a 2 bit AccessCycle Duration field, wherein the AccessCycle Duration field indicates a duration of an access cycle in units of Control Segment Periods, a 5 bit AccessSequencePartition field, wherein the AccessSequencePartition field indicates a partition of an access sequence space to allow an access terminal to signal pilot power and buffer status information with an access sequence, a 4 bit MaxProbesPerSequence field, wherein the MaxProbesPerSequence field indicates a maximum number of probe sequence for one access sequence and is set to n+1, where n is an integer, a 4 bit ProbeRampUpStepSize field, wherein the ProbeRampUpStepSize field indicates a power ramp up used for probes within a probe sequence and is set to a value 0.5*(1+n)dB, a 6 bit RDCHInitialPacketFormat field, wherein the RDCHInitialPacketFormat field is set to a packet format that is used on a first transmission the access terminal makes on a Reverse Link Data Channel (R-DCH) after getting an access grant, a 2 bit PilotStrengthSegmentation field, wherein the PilotStrengthSegmentation field comprises a PilotThreshold1 and PilotThreshold2, an 8 bit OpenLoopAdjust field, wherein the OpenLoopAdjust field indicates a nominal power used by access terminal in an open loop power estimate and is set to value 70+n dB; and transmitting the AccessParameters group message over a communication link.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein generating the AccessParameters group message includes a 3 bit AccessRetryPersistance field, wherein the AccessRetryPersistance field indicates a persistence probability for determining access sequence backoff.

3. The method as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the access terminal uses 2 −n as a retry persistence when the AccessRetryPersistance field is set to n.

The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein: the duration of the access cycle is ‘1’ control segment period when the AccessCycleDuration field is set to ‘00’; the duration of the access cycle is ‘2’ control segment period when the AccessCycleDuration field is set to ‘01’; the duration of the access cycle is ‘3’ control segment period when the AccessCycleDuration field is set to ‘10’; and the duration of the access cycle is ‘4’ control segment period when the AccessCycleDuration field is set to ‘11’.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution, cause at least one device to perform operations comprising: a first set of instructions for generating an AccessParameters group message, the message comprising a 2 bit AccessCycle Duration field, wherein the AccessCycle Duration field indicates a duration of an access cycle in units of Control Segment Periods, a 5 bit AccessSequencePartition field, wherein the AccessSequencePartition field indicates a partition of an access sequence space to allow an access terminal to signal pilot power and buffer status information with an access sequence, a 4 bit MaxProbesPerSequence field, wherein the MaxProbesPerSequence field indicates a maximum number of probe sequence for one access sequence and is set to n+1, where n is an integer, a 4 bit ProbeRampUpStepSize field, wherein the ProbeRampUpStepSize field indicates a power ramp up used for probes within a probe sequence and is set to a value 0.5*(1+n)dB, a 6 bit RDCHInitialPacketFormat field, wherein the RDCHInitialPacketFormat field is set to a packet format that is used on a first transmission the access terminal makes on a Reverse Link Data Channel (R-DCH) after getting an access grant, a 2 bit PilotStrengthSegmentation field, wherein the PilotStrengthSegmentation field comprises a PilotThreshold1 and PilotThreshold2, an 8 bit OpenLoopAdjust field, wherein the OpenLoopAdjust field indicates a nominal power used by access terminal in an open loop power estimate and is set to value 70+n dB; and a second set of instructions for transmitting the AccessParameters group message over a communication link.

A wireless communication system, comprising: a transmitter configured to transmit a signal comprising: a first portion having a 2 bit AccessCycle Duration field wherein the AccessCycle Duration field indicates a duration of an access cycle in units of Control Segment Periods; a second portion having a 5 bit AccessSequencePartition field wherein the AccessSequencePartition field indicates a partition of an access sequence space to allow an access terminal to signal pilot power and buffer status information with an access sequence; a third portion having a 4 bit MaxProbesPerSequence field wherein the MaxProbesPerSequence field indicates a maximum number of probe sequence for one access sequence and is set to n+1, where n is an integer; a fourth portion having a 4 bit ProbeRampUpStepSize field wherein the ProbeRampUpStepSize field indicates a power ramp up used for probes within a probe sequence and is set to a value 0.5*(1+n)dB; a fifth portion having a 6 bit RDCHInitialPacketFormat field wherein the RDCHInitialPacketFormat field is set to a packet format that is used on a first transmission the access terminal makes on a the R Reverse Link Data Channel (R-DCH) after getting an access grant; a sixth portion having a 2 bit PilotStrengthSegmentation field wherein the PilotStrengthSegmentation field comprises a PilotThreshold1 and PilotThreshold2; and a seventh portion having a 8 bit OpenLoopAdjust field wherein the OpenLoopAdjust field indicates a nominal power used by access terminal in an open loop power estimate and is set to value 70+n dB.

In a wireless communication system, an apparatus comprising: a processor configured to generate an AccessParameters group message, the message comprising a 2 bit AccessCycle Duration field, wherein the AccessCycle Duration field indicates a duration of an access cycle in units of Control Segment Periods, a 5 bit AccessSequencePartition field, wherein the AccessSequencePartition field indicates a partition of an access sequence space to allow an access terminal to signal pilot power and buffer status information with an access sequence, a 4 bit MaxProbesPerSequence field, wherein the MaxProbesPerSequence field indicates a maximum number of probe sequence for one access sequence and is set to n+1, where n is an integer, a 4 bit ProbeRampUpStepSize field, wherein the ProbeRampUpStepSize field indicates a power ramp up used for probes within a probe sequence and is set to a value 0.5*(1+n)dB, a 6 bit RDCHInitialPacketFormat field, wherein the RDCHInitialPacketFormat field is set to a packet format that is used on a first transmission the access terminal makes on a Reverse Link Data Channel (R-DCH) after getting an access grant, a 2 bit PilotStrengthSegmentation field, wherein the PilotStrengthSegmentation field comprises a PilotThreshold1 and PilotThreshold2, an 8 bit OpenLoopAdjust field, wherein the OpenLoopAdjust field indicates a nominal power used by access terminal in an open loop power estimate and is set to value 70+n dB; the processor configured to transmit the AccessParameters group message over a communication link; and a memory coupled to the processor.

A method of receiving an AccessParameters group message in a wireless communication system, the method comprising: employing a processor executing computer executable instructions embodied on at least one non-transitory computer readable medium to perform operations comprising: receiving the AccessParameters group message comprising a 2 bit AccessCycle Duration field, wherein the AccessCycle Duration field indicates a duration of an access cycle in units of Control Segment Periods, a 5 bit AccessSequencePartition field, wherein the AccessSequencePartition field indicates a partition of an access sequence space to allow an access terminal to signal pilot power and buffer status information with an access sequence, a 4 bit MaxProbesPerSequence field, wherein the MaxProbesPerSequence field indicates a maximum number of probe sequence for one access sequence and is set to n+1, where n is an integer, a 4 bit ProbeRampUpStepSize field, wherein the ProbeRampUpStepSize field indicates a power ramp up used for probes within a probe sequence and is set to a value 0.5*(1+n)dB, a 6 bit RDCHInitialPacketFormat field, wherein the RDCHInitialPacketFormat field is set to a packet format that is used on a first transmission the access terminal makes on a Reverse Link Data Channel (R-DCH) after getting an access grant, a 2 bit PilotStrengthSegmentation field, wherein the PilotStrengthSegmentation field comprises a PilotThreshold1 and PilotThreshold2, an 8 bit OpenLoopAdjust field, wherein the OpenLoopAdjust field indicates a nominal power used by access terminal in an open loop power estimate and is set to value 70+n dB; and processing the AccessParameters group message.

10. The method as claimed in claim 9 , wherein receiving the AccessParameters group message including a 3 bit AccessRetryPersistance field, wherein the AccessRetryPersistance field indicates a persistence probability for determining access sequence backoff.

11. The method as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the access terminal uses 2 −n as a retry persistence when the AccessRetryPersistance field is set to n.

The method as claimed in claim 9 , wherein: the duration of the access cycle is interpreted as ‘1’ control segment period when the AccessCycleDuration field is set to ‘00’; the duration of the access cycle is interpreted as ‘2’ control segment period when the AccessCycleDuration field is set to ‘01’; the duration of the access cycle is interpreted as ‘3’ control segment period when the AccessCycleDuration field is set to ‘10’; and the duration of the access cycle is interpreted as ‘4’ control segment period when the AccessCycleDuration field is set to ‘11’.
