Described is a system and method for charging a battery. The system includes a processor powered by a battery; and a controller determining a remaining battery charge of the battery. The controller sets a first charge current to recharge the battery when the remaining battery charge is insufficient to operate the processor. The controller wakes the processor when the battery has been recharged so that the remaining battery capacity is sufficient to operate the processor. The processor negotiates for a second charge current to recharge the battery. The controller sets the second charge current when the processor successfully negotiated.

1. A method, comprising: coupling a mobile unit to a host device that supplies external power to the mobile unit; determining a remaining battery charge of a battery of the mobile unit with a controller of the mobile unit; determining if the remaining battery charge is sufficient to operate a processor of the mobile unit with the controller of the mobile unit; if the remaining battery charge is insufficient to operate the processor, charging the battery with a first charge current from the host device while suspending the processor; if the remaining battery charge is sufficient to operate the processor, the controller waking the processor to negotiate for a second charge current from the host device; and charging the battery with the second charge current from the host device upon successful negotiation between the processor and the host device.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising: waking the processor when the battery has been recharged so that the remaining battery charge is sufficient to operate the processor; negotiating, by the processor, for the second charge current to recharge the battery; and setting, by the controller, the second charge current when the processor successfully negotiated the second charge current.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first charge current is provided by a universal serial bus power supply.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first charge current is a maximum of 100 milli-amperes.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second charge current is 500 milli-amperes.

A mobile unit, comprising: a battery rechargeable by a host device that supplies external power to the mobile unit; a processor powered by the battery; and a controller coupled to the processor, the controller determining a remaining battery charge of the battery, the controller setting a first charge current to recharge the battery from the host device and suspending the processor when the remaining battery charge is insufficient to operate the processor, the controller waking the processor to negotiate for a second charge current from the host device to recharge the battery when the remaining battery charge is sufficient to operate the processor, the controller charging the battery with the second charge current from the host device upon successful negotiation between the processor and the host device.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein a power supply supplying the first and second charge currents is a universal serial bus power supply.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first charge current is a maximum of 100 milli-amperes.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the second charge current is greater than 100 milli-amperes.

10. The system of claim 7 , further comprising a universal serial bus port.

11. The system of claim 6 , further comprising: a monitor measuring the remaining battery charge.
