Technical Abstract

Periodic prize draws are conducted by a jackpot controller in a gaming system having one or more electronic gaming devices. The probability of each electronic gaming device winning a particular prize draw is dependent upon the amount wagered on that gaming machine during a period preceding that prize draw. The prize may be a progressive jackpot which comprises an initial starting value and a contribution from the amounts wagered on the electronic gaming devices. If an electronic gaming device wins a prize draw, its player may be granted a feature game to determine the actual prize. Jackpots are suspended pending the completion of the feature game. The probability that a gaming device will win the prize draw, or the relative win probabilities of the gaming devices, may be displayed graphically.

1. A gaming system comprising: at least one processor; at least one input device; at least one display device; and at least one memory device which stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to operate with the at least one display device and the at least one input device: (a) enable a player to place at least one wager on at least one play of a game, (b) for each wagered on play of the game during a first period of time: (A) randomly determine one of a plurality of different primary game outcomes, (B) display the randomly determined primary game outcome, and (C) determine whether to provide a designated award to the player, said determination being separate from any randomly determined primary game outcomes and said determination being based on a first probability of winning the designated award, said determined first probability being based on: (I) a static probability greater than zero of winning the designated award, and (II) a first variable probability of winning the designated award, said first variable probability being determined based on a first amount of wagers placed during the first period of time, and (c) for each wagered on play of the game during a second, partially overlapping period of time: (A) randomly determine one of the plurality of different primary game outcomes, (B) display the randomly determined primary game outcome, and (C) determine whether to provide the designated award to the player, said determination being separate from any randomly determined primary game outcomes and said determination being based on a second probability of winning the designated award, said determined second probability being based on: (I) the static probability greater than zero of winning the designated award, and (II) a second variable probability of winning the designated award, said second variable probability being determined based on a second amount of wagers placed during the second period of time.

2

2. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the first variable probability of winning the designated award is different from the second variable probability of winning the designated award if the first amount of wagers placed during the first period of time is different than the second amount of wagers placed during the second period of time.

3

3. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the designated award is a progressive award.

4

4. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the designated award is one of a plurality of progressive awards.

5

5. A gaming system comprising: a plurality of gaming devices, each gaming device including: at least one processor; at least one input device; at least one display device; and at least one memory device which stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to operate with the at least one display device and the at least one input device: (a) enable a player to place at least one wager on at least one play of a game, (b) for each wagered on play of the game during a first period of time: (A) randomly determine one of a plurality of different primary game outcomes, (B) display the randomly determined primary game outcome, and (C) determine whether to provide a designated award to the player, said determination being separate from any randomly determined primary game outcomes and said determination being based on a first probability of winning the designated award, said determined first probability being: (I) based on a static probability greater than zero of winning the designated award, (II) based on a first variable probability of winning the designated award, said first variable probability being determined based on a first amount of wagers placed during the first period of time, and (III) not based on any amounts of any wagers placed at any other of the plurality of gaming devices, and (c) for each wagered on play of the game during a second, partially overlapping period of time: (A) randomly determine one of the plurality of different primary game outcomes, (B) display the randomly determined primary game outcome, and (C) determine whether to provide the designated award to the player, said determination being separate from any randomly determined primary game outcomes and said determination being based on a second probability of winning the designated award, said determined second probability being: (I) based on the static probability greater than zero of winning the designated award, (II) based on a second variable probability of winning the designated award, said second variable probability being determined based on a second amount of wagers placed during the second period of time, and (III) not based on any amounts of any wagers placed at any other of the plurality of gaming devices.

6

6. The gaming system of claim 5 , wherein for each of the gaming devices, the first variable probability of winning the designated award is different from the second variable probability of winning the designated award if the first amount of wagers placed during the first period of time is different than the second amount of wagers placed during the second period of time.

7

7. The gaming system of claim 5 , wherein the designated award is a progressive award.

8

8. The gaming system of claim 5 , wherein the designated award is one of a plurality of progressive awards.

9

9. A method of operating a gaming system, said method comprising: (a) enabling a player to place at least one wager on at least one play of a game; (b) for each wagered on play of the game during a first period of time: (A) causing at least one processor to execute a plurality of instructions to randomly determine one of a plurality of different primary game outcomes, (B) causing at least one display device to display the randomly determined primary game outcome, and (C) causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to determine whether to provide a designated award to the player, said determination being separate from any randomly determined primary game outcomes and said determination being based on a first probability of winning the designated award, said determined first probability being based on: (I) a static probability greater than zero of winning the designated award, and (II) a first variable probability of winning the designated award, said first variable probability being determined based on a first amount of wagers placed during the first period of time; and (c) for each wagered on play of the game during a second, partially overlapping period of time: (A) causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to randomly determine one of the plurality of different primary game outcomes, (B) causing the at least one display device to display the randomly determined primary game outcome, and (C) causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to determine whether to provide the designated award to the player, said determination being separate from any randomly determined primary game outcomes and said determination being based on a second probability of winning the designated award, said determined second probability being based on: (I) the static probability greater than zero of winning the designated award, and (II) a second variable probability of winning the designated award, said second variable probability being determined based on a second amount of wagers placed during the second period of time.

10

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first variable probability of winning the designated award is different from the second variable probability of winning the designated award if the first amount of wagers placed during the first period of time is different than the second amount of wagers placed during the second period of time.
