Legal claims defining the scope of protection. Each claim is shown in both the original legal language and a plain English translation.
1. A method of transmitting channel quality information in a multi-carrier wireless communication system, the method performed by a mobile station (MS) and comprising: receiving information related to a link between a first forward link carrier and a first reverse link carrier, wherein the first forward link carrier is used to receive data from a base station (BS) and the first reverse link carrier is used to transmit data to the BS; receiving information related to a link between a second forward link carrier and a second reverse link carrier, wherein the second forward link carrier is used to receive data from the BS and the second reverse link carrier is used to transmit data to the BS; transmitting channel quality information for the first forward link carrier of the BS; and transmitting channel quality information for the second forward link carrier of the BS, wherein the channel quality information for the first forward link carrier and the channel quality information for the second forward link carrier are transmitted to the BS via a same reverse link carrier, wherein the first forward link carrier and the second forward link carrier are not the same, and wherein the first reverse link carrier and the second reverse link carrier are not the same.
In a multi-carrier wireless system, a mobile station receives information about the link quality of two forward link carriers (used for receiving data from a base station) and their corresponding reverse link carriers (used for transmitting data to the base station). The mobile station then transmits channel quality information for both forward link carriers to the base station using the *same* reverse link carrier. Importantly, the two forward link carriers are different, and the two reverse link carriers are also different. This allows the mobile station to report channel conditions for multiple download channels via a single upload channel.
2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving power control information for the first and second reverse link carriers, wherein the power control information is determined in consideration of the channel quality information for the first forward link carrier and the channel quality information for the second forward link carrier.
The mobile station, as described above, also receives power control information for the two reverse link carriers. This power control information is calculated at the base station by considering the channel quality information reported by the mobile station for *both* forward link carriers. This allows the base station to dynamically adjust the power levels for the mobile station's transmissions based on the downlink channel conditions, even when the channel quality reports are multiplexed onto a single uplink.
3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving a notification signal via the first forward link carrier, wherein the notification signal is related to acquisition of the second reverse link carrier.
The mobile station, as described above, also receives a notification signal via the *first* forward link carrier. This notification signal is related to the mobile station acquiring or using the *second* reverse link carrier. This means the base station can signal to the mobile station, using one downlink, that the mobile station should start using a different uplink for communication, potentially to balance load or improve signal quality.
4. A method of receiving channel quality information in a multi-carrier wireless communication system, the method performed by a base station (BS) and comprising: transmitting information related to a link between a first forward link carrier and a first reverse link carrier, wherein the first forward link carrier is used to transmit data from the BS and the first reverse link carrier is used to receive data at the BS; transmitting information related to a link between a second forward link carrier and a second reverse link carrier, wherein the second forward link carrier is used to transmit data from the BS and the second reverse link carrier is used to receive data at the BS; receiving channel quality information for the first forward link carrier of the BS; and receiving channel quality information for the second forward link carrier of the BS, wherein the channel quality information for the first forward link carrier and the channel quality information for the second forward link carrier are received via a same reverse link carrier, wherein the first forward link carrier and the second forward link carrier are not the same, and wherein the first reverse link carrier and the second reverse link carrier are not the same.
In a multi-carrier wireless system, a base station transmits information about the link quality of two forward link carriers (used for transmitting data to a mobile station) and their corresponding reverse link carriers (used for receiving data from the mobile station). The base station then receives channel quality information from the mobile station for both forward link carriers, but receives this information via the *same* reverse link carrier. The two forward link carriers are different, and the two reverse link carriers are also different. This allows the base station to efficiently collect channel feedback from the mobile station.
5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising transmitting power control information for the first and second reverse link carriers, wherein the power control information is determined in consideration of the channel quality information for the first forward link carrier and the channel quality information for the second forward link carrier.
The base station, as described above, also transmits power control information to the mobile station for the two reverse link carriers. This power control information is calculated by the base station considering the channel quality information it receives for *both* forward link carriers. This enables the base station to manage the uplink power of the mobile station based on the downlink conditions, improving overall network performance and reducing interference.
6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising: transmitting a notification signal via the first forward link carrier, wherein the notification signal is related to acquisition of the second reverse link carrier.
The base station, as described above, also transmits a notification signal via the *first* forward link carrier. This notification signal informs the mobile station about acquiring or using the *second* reverse link carrier. This allows the base station to control which uplink carrier the mobile station uses, potentially for load balancing or to optimize spectral efficiency.
7. A mobile terminal for transmitting channel quality information in a multi-carrier wireless communication system, the mobile terminal comprising: a transmitting/receiving unit configured to transmit data and receive data; a display unit configured to display user interface information; an input unit configured to input user data; and a processing unit configured to receive information related to a link between a first forward link carrier and a first reverse link carrier, to receive information related to a link between a second forward link carrier and a second reverse link carrier, to transmit channel quality information for the first forward link carrier of a base station (BS) and to transmit channel quality information for the second forward link carrier of the BS, wherein the first forward link carrier is used to receive data from the BS and the first reverse link carrier is used to transmit data to the BS, wherein the second forward link carrier is used to receive data from the BS and the second reverse link carrier is used to transmit data to the BS, wherein the channel quality information for the first forward link carrier and the channel quality information for the second forward link carrier are transmitted to the BS via a same reverse link carrier, wherein the first forward link carrier and the second forward link carrier are not the same, and wherein the first reverse link carrier and the second reverse link carrier are not the same.
A mobile terminal in a multi-carrier wireless system includes a transceiver for sending and receiving data, a display for user interface, an input unit, and a processor. The processor is configured to receive link quality information for two forward link carriers (downlink channels) and their associated reverse link carriers (uplink channels). It then transmits channel quality reports for *both* forward link carriers to the base station using the *same* reverse link carrier. The two forward carriers are different and the two reverse carriers are different. The mobile terminal thus reports downlink channel status using a single uplink.
8. The mobile terminal of claim 7 , wherein the processing unit is further configured to receive power control information for the first and second reverse link carriers, the power control information being determined in consideration of the channel quality information for the first forward link carrier and the channel quality information for the second forward link carrier.
In the mobile terminal described above, the processor is further configured to receive power control information for the first and second reverse link carriers. This power control is calculated at the base station in consideration of the channel quality information for *both* forward link carriers, sent by the mobile terminal. This allows the mobile terminal to adjust its transmit power based on base station instructions optimized for the current downlink channel conditions, improving uplink performance.
9. The mobile terminal of claim 7 , wherein the processing unit is further configured to receive a notification signal via the first forward link carrier, wherein the notification signal is related to acquisition of the second reverse link carrier.
In the mobile terminal described above, the processor is further configured to receive a notification signal via the first forward link carrier.
