Technical Abstract

Provided are techniques for a network management system notification shortcut. Also provides are techniques controlling an event notification shortcut in a network management system. The network management system comprising: a probe for intercepting a system event from a monitored system and creating an event item or modifying an event item associated with the system event; a collection database server for collecting a new event item or modification to an existing event item and forwarding a event notification to a second database server; a second database server for receiving the event notification, requesting the event item data or modification data and forwarding the event item to a first client; a first client for receiving the event notification and requesting the event item data or modification data; whereby the collection database server sends the event notification directly to the first client bypassing the second database server if the event satisfies a priority condition.

Legal claims defining the scope of protection, as filed with the USPTO.

1

1. A method, comprising: intercepting a system event from a monitored network; storing an event record corresponding to the system event at a first database server; correlating the event record to a plurality of communication channels, each communication channel corresponding to a client of a plurality of clients, based upon a plurality of defined interests, each of the plurality of defined interests corresponding to one of the plurality of communication channels; transmitting an event notification corresponding to the event record to a second database server, wherein the event notification comprises notification of the event record stored on the first database server; and, in response to a determination that the system event is a high priority event, transmitting the event notification to the plurality clients, bypassing the second database server via the plurality of communication channels; wherein the intercepting comprising: identifying, by a probe, the system event; and assigning a priority to the system event based upon a rules file associated with the probe.

2

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the correlating is based upon a filter associated with each communication channel.

3

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the filter in in the form of regular expression.

4

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving from a particular diem of the plurality of clients a request for the event record; and in response to the receiving, transmitting the event record to the client.

5

5. An apparatus, comprising: a processor; a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium coupled to the processor; and logic, stored on computer-readable storage medium and executed on the processor, comprising logic for: intercepting a system event from a monitored network; storing an event record corresponding to the system event at a first database server; correlating the event record to a plurality of communication channels, each communication channel corresponding to a client of a plurality of clients, based upon a plurality of defined interests, each of the plurality of defined interests corresponding to one of the plurality of communication channels; transmitting an event notification corresponding to the event record to a second database server, wherein the event notification comprises notification of the event record stored on the first database server; and, in response to a determination that the system event is a high priority event, transmitting the event notification to the plurality clients, bypassing the second database server via the plurality of communication channels; wherein the logic for intercepting comprising logic for: identifying, by a probe, the system event; and assigning a priority to the system event based upon a rules file associated with the probe.

6

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the logic for correlating is based upon a filter associated with each communication channel.

7

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the filter in in the form of a regular expression.

8

8. The apparatus of claim 5 , the logic further comprising logic for: receiving from a particular client of the plurality of clients a request for the event record; and in response to the receiving, transmitting the event record to the client.

9

9. A computer programming product, comprising: a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium; and logic, stored on computer-readable storage medium for execution on a processor, comprising logic for: intercepting a system event from a monitored network; storing an event record corresponding to the system event at a first database server; correlating the event record to a plurality of communication channels, each communication channel corresponding to a client of a plurality of clients, based upon a plurality of defined interests, each of the plurality of defined interests corresponding to one of the plurality of communication channels; transmitting an event notification corresponding to the event record to a second database server, wherein the event notification comprises notification of the event record stored on the first database server; and, in response to a determination that the system event is a high priority event, transmitting the event notification to the plurality clients, bypassing the second database server via the plurality of communication channels; wherein the logic for intercepting comprising logic for: identifying, by a probe the system event; and assigning a priority to the system event based upon a rules file associated with the probe.

10

10. The computer programming product of claim 9 wherein the logic for correlating is based upon a filter associated with each communication channel.

11

11. The computer programming product of claim 10 , wherein the filter in in the form of a regular expression.

12

12. The computer programming product of claim 9 , the logic further comprising logic for: receiving from a particular client of the plurality of clients a request for the event record; and in response to the receiving, transmitting the event record to the client.
