Technical Abstract

An image capturing apparatus includes an image sensor 104 in which at least part of pixels arranged in two dimensions are configured as focus detection pixels with divided-pupil, a memory control circuit 113 configured to read out from a memory position information for the focus detection pixels 401, 402 stored in the memory, and a correction circuit 110 configured to identify positions of the focus detection pixels 401, 402 in the image sensor 104 based on the position information for the focus detection pixels 401, 402 and to correct a defective focus detection pixel signal using defect-free focus detection pixel signals.

1

1. An image capturing apparatus comprising: an image sensor in which at least part of pixels arranged in two dimensions are configured as detection pixels with divided-pupil; a defect correction unit configured to identify a pixel signal which requires defect correction among pixel signals output from the image sensor using correction information stored in a memory, and perform the defect correction on the identified pixel signal; and an extraction unit configured to identify and extract pixel signals of the detection pixels to be used for detection from pixel signals output from the image sensor using the correction information, wherein the correction information includes information for identifying positions of the detection pixels in the image sensor and information for identifying the position in the image sensor of a defective pixel.

2

2. The image capturing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the correction information includes information for identifying whether or not each pixel of the image sensor is the detection pixel in relation to position information of each pixel in the image sensor, and information for identifying whether or not each pixel of the image sensor is a defective pixel in relation to the position information of each pixel in the image sensor.

3

3. The image capturing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the extraction unit further identifies a defective pixel signal among the pixel signals of the detection pixels identified on the basis of the correction information, and the defect correction unit performs the defect correction on the defective pixel signal.

4

4. The image capturing apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the defect correction unit performs the defect correction on the defective pixel signal among the pixel signals of the detection pixels using the pixel signals of non-defective detection pixels.

5

5. The image capturing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the defect correction unit performs the defect correction on, as the pixel signal which requires defect correction, the pixel signals of the detection pixels and a pixel signal of the defective pixel on the basis of the correction information.

6

6. The image capturing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the correction information includes information for identifying pupil region of the detection pixels, and the defect correction unit performs defect correction on the pixel signal which requires the defect correction among pixel signals of the detection pixels identified by the extraction unit on the basis of the correction information.

7

7. The image capturing apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein the defect correction unit performs defect correction on the pixel signal which requires the defect correction among pixel signals of the detection pixels using pixel signals of the same pupil region of non-defective detection pixels.

8

8. The image capturing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the correction information includes information for identifying a direction of pupil division of the detection pixels, and the defect correction unit performs defect correction on the pixel signal which requires the defect correction among pixel signals of the detection pixels identified by the extraction unit using pixel signals of the non-defective detection pixels whose direction of the pupil division is the same as that of the detection pixel which output the pixel signal which requires the defect correction.

9

9. The image capturing apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising: a phase difference detection unit configured to detect phase difference information using the detection pixels identified by the extraction unit.

10

10. A control method of an image capturing apparatus that comprises an image sensor in which at least part of pixels arranged in two dimensions are configured as detection pixels with divided-pupil, defect correction unit configured to perform the defect correction on a pixel signal output from the image sensor, and extraction unit configured to identify and extract pixel signals of the detection pixels to be used for detection from pixel signals output from the image sensor, the method comprising: a step of identifying a pixel signal which requires defect correction among pixel signals output from the image sensor using correction information stored in a memory; and a step of identifying and extracting the pixel signals of the detection pixels using the correction information, wherein the correction information includes information for identifying positions of the detection pixels in the image sensor and information for identifying the position in the image sensor of a defective pixel.
