Technical Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention provide a method and apparatus for handling emergency signaling in an IP Multimedia Subsystem network. A Proxy-Call Session Control Function receives a message requesting set up of a session. The message is associated with an IP Multimedia Private Identity. The P-CSCF determines that the message relates to an emergency call. If an emergency override tag associated with the IMPI is provisioned or set at the P-CSCF, then the message is forwarding the SIP message to a Serving-Call Session Control Function (S-CSCF) for further handling. However, if an emergency override tag associated with the IMPI is not provisioned or set at the P-CSCF, the message is forwarded to an Emergency-Call Session Control Function (E-CSCF). The P-CSCF exercises control over the handling of emergency signaling, according to embodiments of the invention.

1

1. A method of handling emergency signaling in an IP Multimedia Subsystem network, the method comprising: at a Proxy-Call Session Control Function, receiving a SIP message associated with an IP Multimedia Private Identity, the SIP message requesting set up of a session; at the Proxy-Call Session Control Function, determining that the SIP message relates to an emergency call; determining whether an emergency override tag associated with the IP Multimedia Private Identity is provided at the Proxy-Call Session Control Function, wherein the emergency override tag, if provisioned, the SIP message and the emergency call is handled by a Serving-Call Session Control Function, and the emergency override tag, if not provisioned, the SIP message and the emergency call is handled by an Emergency-Call Session Control Function; in the event that an emergency override tag associated with the IP Multimedia Private Identity is provisioned at the Proxy-Call Session Control Function, forwarding the SIP message to the Serving-Call Session Control Function for further handling; and in the event that an emergency override tag associated with the IP Multimedia Private Identity is not provisioned at the Proxy-Call Session Control Function, forwarding the message to the Emergency-Call Session Control Function.

2

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the emergency override tag is provisioned in the event that the IP Multimedia Private Identity is associated with one of a predetermined access network, a predetermined access network type, a predetermined authentication method, and a User Equipment that is not located in a visited network.

3

3. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising, prior to receiving the message requesting set up of a session, receiving an emergency override tag for the IP Multimedia Private Identity registered from a Serving-Call Session Control Function in one of SIP 200 OK message and a SIP NOTIFY message.

4

4. A Proxy-Call Session Control Function node for use in an IP Multimedia Subsystem network, the Proxy-Call Session Control Function comprising: a receiver for receiving a message associated with an IP Multimedia Private Identity, the message requesting set up of a session; a determining function for determining that the message relates to an emergency call; an emergency override function for determining that an emergency override tag associated with the IP Multimedia Private Identity is provisioned at the Proxy-Call Session Control Function, wherein the emergency override tag, if provisioned, the message and the emergency call is handled by a Serving-Call Session Control Function, and the emergency override tag, if not provisioned, the message and the emergency call is handled by an Emergency-Call Session control Function; and a transmitter for, in the event that it is determined that an emergency override tag associated with the IP Multimedia Private Identity is provisioned at the Proxy-Call Session Control Function, forwarding the message to the Serving-Call Session Control Function for further handling, and in the event that the emergency override tag associated with the IP Multimedia Private Identity is not provisioned at the Proxy-Call Session Control Function, forwarding the message to the Emergency-Call Session Control Function.

5

5. The Proxy-Call Session Control Function node according to claim 4 , wherein the receiver is arranged to receive an emergency override tag for the IP Multimedia Private Identity registered from a Serving-Call Session Control Function in one of SIP 200 OK message and a SIP NOTIFY message.
