The present invention enables the collection by credit/debit card payment of customer co-pay and self-pay charges via an integrated point-of-service transaction management system and method. The system and method of the present invention may assist health care facilities in the collection of co-pay and self-pay charges at the time service is rendered. The present invention can be implemented anywhere cash, checks, credit cards or debit cards are accepted for payment.

1. A computerized, integrated point of service transaction management system, comprising: at least two points of service within a service facility; a network-attached computing terminal at at least two of the points of service, each comprising: a magnetic card swipe reader for reading credit/debit cards; and a personal identification number (PIN) pad for entering PIN numbers to authorize payments using the credit/debit cards; and a first network-attached server computer operatively coupled to each of the computing terminals, the server comprising: at least one interface to a legacy system, for: retrieving from the legacy system information of a customer based on the entry at one of the computing terminals of one of a customer name, a customer phone number, or a swipe of the customer's credit/debit card for payment; and uploading to the legacy system updated customer information entered at one of the computing terminals; a web server operatively coupled to each of the computing terminals that provides point of service (POS) web pages to users with POS User access rights and administrator web pages to users with POS Administrator access rights; a computerized transaction database operative to track customer payments received at any of the computing terminals for current and overdue charges, each payment associated with at least one payment code corresponding to a service provided at any of the points of service; and in the case at least one of the payments is made with legal tender, a bag for containing the legal tender, the bag correspondent to a bag identifier, wherein the bag identifier is associated with a location and a custody identifier of a party having custody of the bag, and wherein the location and custody of the bag are updated in real-time to provide a verified chain of custody.
2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the service facility is a health care facility.
3. The system of claim 1 , where the legal tender is at least one of cash and checks.
4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an identifier of a bag collection point for the consolidation of the bag with at least one additional bag, wherein each additional bag is associated with a respective bag identifier.
5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the bag collection point is located within the service facility.
6. The system of claim 1 , wherein contents of the bag is posted to an accounting system of the service facility.
7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transaction database is updated with an identifier of a bag location remote from the service facility.
8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transaction database is updated with a confirmation that the legal tender was deposited in a bank.
